Think golf is slow and boring? Golf Battle begs to differ.
Its anarchic approach to the grand tradition of whacking balls into holes brings new meaning to the phrase ‘crazy golf’.
You and your dimpled spherical companion are dropped into fun obstacle-laden courses with five other Golf Battle players, and asked to scrap it out for victory. In Classic mode this means holing the ball in the fewest number of shots within a time limit. Simple.
But in our favourite mode, Rush, it’s a straight race to the hole without a care for how many shots you take along the way. Playing online like this, against five other real players from around the world, is an absolute hoot. Every session feels like absolute chaos.
As other players’ balls fly everywhere, you’ve got to keep focused on aiming and powering your shot just right, by dragging back on the screen and letting go.
As you unlock more and more new stages, you’ll get ever more elaborate courses – you must make leaps of faith over dead zones using ramps, try to avoid sandtraps and ping your ball up and around loops.
It’s a constant scramble to get to the finish, and it’s relentlessly entertaining. And if you want to take it all a bit more seriously, there are new clubs and balls to unlock and upgrade.
Golf Battle is a pleasingly unhinged take on the grand old game of golf, one that sometimes feels more like a racing game than a sports sim. And it’s all the better for it.
