Namaste! Yoga for everybody

Are you down with downward dog? Apps to suit all kinds of yogi.

Yoga is for everyone. Far more than just a bit of stretching on a mat, yoga is known as ‘moving meditation’ – great for the mind, while working your body hard and building strength too.

Whether you’ve never before heard the word ‘vinyasa’ or you’ve been perfecting your Asana for years, there are great yoga apps to suit your needs. Get ready for improved strength, better posture and greater flexibility.

Start at the beginning

The journey to a perfect handstand begins with a single plank. Yoga Studio has classes and programmes to get complete yoga novices started.

Learn some Sanskrit

Flip through Pocket Yoga’s catalogue of poses to get a deeper understanding of the postures, and practise saying ‘Utthita Parsvakonasana’ (that’s extended side angle pose) without stopping for a breath. You can also try one of the app’s routines.

Personalise your practice

Use your newfound body awareness and the Yoga | Down Dog app to create your own personalised practice. Set parameters such as your preferred style, duration and your level of expertise and the app will generate a sequence to suit you.

Mix it up

Yoga is popular with many because the practice is so versatile. Asana Rebel takes static postures that look easy but are incredibly powerful, combining them into modern fitness programmes.

Join a live class

Working out with others at a set time is a great motivator. When you can’t make it to the studio Yogaia has excellent live classes you can join. The teacher can see you as you practise and will give you encouragement and guide you on necessary adjustments.

Target specifics

Lots of sun salutations can give you a full body workout, but you can also find a flow to target specific muscle groups. Pick a yoga equivalent of leg day, arm day or core strength from Daily Yoga’s comprehensive selection.

Practice makes perfect

Instagram Yogi Sjana Elise Earp has impeccable form and a positive attitude that will inspire you. Sign up to the Sweat app to access Earp’s 12 week Body and Mind Vinyasa-style programme. The video workouts are designed to make you stronger, healthier and happier.
