跑胡子是中华民族古老的游戏，实战玩家遍布全国各省。男女老少皆喜好，是逢年过节，聚会必备娱乐项目。亦称“字牌”、“纸牌”，在我国某些地区也叫“跑符子”、“跑胡纸”、“跑和字”、“二七十”、“煨胡子”、“棍棍”、“大贰”、”歪胡子“等。它的组牌规则与麻将相似，但又比麻将更加灵活、变化多样。字牌的牌面比扑克要小，易于携带。在现代人讲究方便、灵活和健康生活方式的今天，字牌是一项很好的休闲娱乐活动。
该游戏在湖南中西部、四川泸州、贵州遵义的一些地区也有类似的游戏，组成一样，但规则和叫法不同。在泸州和遵义地区叫“大贰”。在广西桂林叫“八一字牌”、“桂林字牌”。
