Ratings and Reviews
Affinity Photo 2 exceeds expectations
Affinity has created a stellar suite of apps. I use them almost daily for a small nonprofit trade advocacy organization. Affinity photo works for all my photo editing and enhancements. there are plenty of video tutorials out there to help with all aspects of using the app for non professionals, but even professionals will appreciate how robust Affinity Photo (and the entire suite) meets demand.
In a world where more and more app developers want you to subscribe to perpetual pay models, under the illusion of incentives for app improvement, they invariably get lazy and produce almost nothing over time. Yet the consumer still pays and pays and pays...
Affinity sticks to the traditional model that is better for consumers. You pay for the app, you use the app. The developer provides fixes and updates. When Affinity has something better to offer (in this case version 2), you buy an upgrade. I love this model and I love this app.
You will never use it
This app does nothing well. The user interface is segmented so you do raw development in one part of the application, then you do the rest after you clicked “Develop”. All the history of the adjustments that you have done in develop mode are gone forever, the adjustments are permanent. What the application does in the other personas Gimp does much, much better at no cost. Your camera manufacturer gives you a raw developer for free which is great for bringing back detail in the highlights and shadows. You can combine that with Gimp and you have a perfect workflow at no cost to you. The completely free app Darktable is a marvel compared to Affinity. This app ticks all the boxes, that’s why it gets good reviews from people who review it but don’t actually use it, but you will find only a few people who used this app for longer than a couple of hours, but bought it because it was ‘nice and cheap’. It has some major bugs that had frustrated me to the point that I stopped using it. You will not be able to reach the publisher because they are in the UK and don’t care about US customers since after you have paid them you serve no purpose.
Genuinely the only way to start learning visual creation tools
I have found that every time I try to learn with Photoshop Adobe products, and all those things the monthly charge that I face actually actively de-incentivizes me. When I forget to dedicate time to learning those programs for that whole month I end up feeling terrible. But, then my savior Affinity came to my rescue! With the one time charge that affinity offers, you to have all your programs for one flat price. The monthly issue is no longer at play. You learn at your pace because you OWN the software outright also using skillshare to learn the software has been a breeze. I'm sure it's easy to do Photoshop as well. I tried myself. I just found that I always had that monthly indication and billing making me not feel well, even when I was learning because I felt like I was costing myself money with every little mis-step I took.
