Block-a-pix with animation
I love Conceptis - both the website and apps and this is clearly a new direction. The animations and pictures are probably targeted to a younger audience but the puzzles themselves are unforgiving of touch placement on small screens like phones, even with zooming, etc.
Here's the thing. This app is clearly designed for kids, which in itself is fine and dandy. The first few puzzles are a tutorial designed to help new young puzzlers, and the animations and cheery owl character help keep them engaged. Great so far.
Except the amount of "paint" is limited, meaning that any "errors" use up resources. These will replenish over time... or can be bought with premium currency. In other words, there is an artificial scarcity imposed which pushes the player towards spending real money.
That's the combination that bothers me. An app clearly designed for kids, but which penalizes experimentation by encouraging them to spend money. This app is literally monetizing a kid's puzzle learning experience. And that is morally foul.
A game that loses its identity
This is a game with no identity. It’s marketed for young kids with a difficulty level too high for them. It removes the crisp clean UI conceptis is known for and replaces it with a clunky thing that penalizes it’s own inaccuracy while occasionally adding timers to change it from a relaxing, thoughtful game into a rushed, anxiety-inducing struggle. And while it’s pretty to look at, it ruins the block-a-pix experience of building a picture from pixels by making the pictures so big that there’s no feel of an overall picture while working any smaller puzzles. All in all, the game isn’t awful but it’s certainly not good, and easily the worst offering to date from conceptis.
