Description

Oko is a smart camera app that helps you explore your surroundings with real-time feedback. You can use it to recognize walk and don't walk signals at lighted intersections.
At an intersection, oko tells you the state of the pedestrian light by playing audio, haptic and audio feedback. In addition it can also be used to align yourself towards your crossing and helps you with not veering off into traffic. Oko practices privacy by design. Anything visible through the camera is processed and never leaves your device, unless you decide to share your data with us to improve the application(*).

Do you have feedback, questions or feature requests?
Contact us by email at: feedback@ayes.ai.

Oko is closely co-developed with blind and visually impaired users.

(*) You can decide to share the images detected by the application with us by going to the oko camera settings and activating the "Share images anonymously" option.

More reliable and easy to use than an APS

I’ve been so impressed with this app! It’s so easy to use even when the environment is too loud to hear VoiceOver speech — I can just say “Hey Siri, open OKO” and it immediately jumps into action with haptics and sounds giving me my own accessible pedestrian signal. I love the haptics because I can still get the crosswalk signal information while simultaneously focusing on the traffic sounds. It also saves me time because (1) I can get the visible pedestrian signal status as I’m approaching the intersection and (2) if I want to cross kitty corner and don’t have the walk signal in front of me I can quickly turn my phone to check if I already have the walk signal to cross in the other direction. It has given me a lot more confidence and independence navigating my city after vision loss and makes crossing the street much more analogous to how I could when I was fully-sighted.

Please allow for no audio

Hello, this app has worked really well, during the day at least. And I think it has a lot of potential. Please allow a setting to turn off audio and use haptics only. For those of us that are hot and use hearing aids, the constant beeping in our ears is distracting and dangerous. I try to turn the volume all the way down, but it won’t let me and then gives me a pop up warning that says “audio volume is very low.” Well, not low enough. I cannot hear ambient cars if that is in my ear. Trust that for Deafblind folks, haptics is absolutely enough. EDIT: I do see that you do have an audio off setting now, but it defaults back to ON whenever I flip back and forth between nav apps and this app, so practically every intersection. Maybe this is a bug?
Another suggestion would be to work with other nav apos like Seeing Eye, Blind square, etc. to embed your app within theirs. I use seeing eye because it works fairly well with braille, but to switch it back and forth at each intersection is a bit clunky and can lose your place on the nav apps.
Other than that, very good app!

Hi Lexie, thank you so much for sharing this interesting feedback. Our technical team will look into the situation of the audio toggle when switching between applications. Don't hesitate to reach us at feedback@ayes.ai if you have more feedback. Thanks, OKO team

Fantastic application for blind and low vision users

I wanted something like this for a long time. Since I can’t see the crossing signals, I would typically use my Magnifier app to locate and magnify the signal so I can see it and then when it’s safe to cross now, this app picks up the signal well before I reach the curb and let me know what the current state of the crossing signal is when a single changes to walk, I am immediately notified and can proceed across the street as long as the camera can focus on the signal the application quickly communicates changes in the crossing signal.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER FOR TGE SAFETY OF BLIND AND LOW VISION USERE EVERY WHERE!!!!!!!

Thank you for defending this app.
