SmartRules lets you easily create rules for SmartThings, so you can finally make your smart home smart! No more struggling to search through the published SmartApps to find something that meets your needs, or worse yet, trying to write the code yourself. With SmartRules, you just specify what should happen, when, and it does the rest.
Want to turn on a light when motion is detected outside, it's after sunset and you're not home? No problem!
Want to unlock the door when you arrive home, but only if there's a leak in your basement? Strange, but you can do it!
Define a trigger, set some conditions, and specify the actions to take. Your devices are all organized and easy to work with.
You can also quickly trigger rules with QuickTap. Add SmartRules to your Today Screen, and to your Apple Watch and quickly trigger a rule with a quick tap! Just add the "QuickTap" trigger to any rule, and it will show up in both of these convenient places.

Squishing some bugs. This version fixes an issue with sunrise/sunset rules and an annoyance with the height of the Today Screen widget.
Ratings and Reviews
Great app that makes Smart Things hub actually useful
We have had two automated homes that use rather sophisticated control systems, but when we bought a small office building and desired automation we decided to try out some newer (and less expensive) hardware along with the Smart Things hub. We were almost ready to throw in the towel and go back to the more expensive systems because of the lack of complex rules in Smart Things (e.g., multiple conditions for triggers) when I found Smart Rules. With just a few minutes I was able to set up rules that should allow us to control our HVAC system based on things like humidity sensors (in thermostats) and outside temperature. Assuming it works as promised (and reviews in the Smart Things community suggest it does) this app takes Smart Things from a simple user interface to a product that’s actually useful. It’s what Smart Things SHOULD have been, but has never been.
Easy to use, Reliable
I am not a programmer but found this app to be easy to use... once you get your head back into it. There are so many interfaces in a smart home that has even modest complexity, and each time I buy something new or restore some piece to operation, I feel like I need to relearn something I had mastered only a few months before. This app is no exception but the ‘relearn time’ is always a matter of minutes.
I chose Smartthings as my hub once I realized this app was available. I can tie together diverse types of hardware within a common hub & software framework. Choosing your own icons is a nice touch, although I wish you could reorder them once defined so, in my case, the security stuff can be on top.
Remember, so many problems with Zwave, Zigbee, or WiFi equipment have to do with the quality of your network, not the logic embedded in your software. Spend an extra $50 on a repeater & relax.
Must-have for power users
Simple yet powerful set of rules that lets me do what the SmartThings Classic app should've had from the start. The app lets me setup automation to only execute under certain conditions (e.g. set entryway lights to 10% at 9pm IFF Mon-Thu AND entry light >40% AND bedroom light is off).
Let me say that $10 is a small price to pay for enhanced functionality that costs less than a smart bulb.
I’ve also used this app to set up integration with HomeKit (albeit a bit complicated) so I can control non-HomeKit devices from the HomeKit controls in control center. For example, I first set up scenes in HomeKit that set my Living room lights to 98% brightness. Then, I have a SmartRules rule that says when my living room lights are 98%, SmartThings should run my Daytime lights automation—and voila! My non-HomeKit Sengled bulbs now brighten too!
- Ability to duplicate rules
- More icon options for rules
Tip to developer:
Consider updating the aesthetics of the app icon and the interface. The functionality is there, but the look may make the app appear outmoded to the uninitiated.
