Description

Find and fix effortless files and folders with invalid characters in their name that prevent syncing with OneDrive or SharePoint.

Auto Rename app provides assistance finding and renaming files/folders containing invalid character(s) in their name; see OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitation article. For the user convenience, an archive, log file, and error options are available to save changes being made or review possible permission conflicts.

OneDrive reserves the use of characters that have special meaning on filename. For example, if a file or folder you are trying to upload to OneDrive contains an invalid character(s), it will fail to upload to Microsoft cloud servers. Thus, the sync process fails to continue. Alternatively, one can manually find and rename files or folders with invalid character files before syncing to OneDrive and/or SharePoint when the file transfer process fails to upload.

In addition, app provides option to list files whose name length is between the range of 50 to 300 characters long. Feature is useful as the file path cannot contain more than 400 characters when syncing files in OneDrive. For example, the length of the OneDrive root folder plus the relative path of the file cannot be more than 520 characters.

Excellent

This is an excellent tool that works well and has saved me hours. It also allows me to use OneDrive for backing up my Mac, which otherwise would not be feaisble because of so many illegal characters in thousands of file names. This app fixes them all successfully in seconds. It is not perfect, with a slightly primitive interface and freezes sometimes. Also the file name character count function would be very usful if it included the file path (not just the file name) - it only counts the characters in the actual file name, which is better than nothing. The strange thing is that this excellent app is so hard to find - and is not provided by OneDrive / Microsoft. I suggest renaming the App so it is easier to find in the App store and online (e.g. include Ondrive and illegal characters in the name). Also, try to get the reviewers writing articles about how to write Terminal code to change illegal characters, or to try to do it in Finder (neither of which worked for me) to add this great App to their reviews. I searched several times unsuccessfully for an App that does what the Auto Renme App does - it is excellent but needs better publicitiy since many people doubtless need this function but like me perhaps assume there is no App available that does this.
