Folder Snapshot Utility will make a rapid backup copy (a ‘snapshot’) of anything you throw at it. This is much faster than a traditional backup copy (think ~1200x faster) and uses practically zero disk space. Therefore, Folder Snapshot Utility can be used as a rudimentary ‘version control’ tool – storing backups quickly and efficiently so you can ‘roll back’ to a previous version if you need to. Take a snapshot by simply dragging-and-dropping items onto the dock icon, or just right-click in the Finder and choose ‘take snapshot’. You may opt to enter a comment as your snapshot is taken, which may serve as a useful reminder if you ever decide to restore the snapshot. You can store your snapshots wherever you like, and different snapshots can be stored in different places – even on external disks. Folder Snapshot Utility does not require your disc to be APFS formatted. Older Macs and external discs are welcome here!

Basically Works, Could Be Better

The app works as follows:Run the app, point it at a folder (there are a couple ways to do this) & backup.As far as I can tell, it appears the app will only backup when you tell it to, and you must re-select the folder you want backed up every time….It doesn’t really work as version control since its fully manual…If I’m not mistaken it should be possible to achieve the same result using an AFPS formatted drive & creating manual copies…I was able to find it copies its files to the user library folder under: ~/Library/Containers/com.bonhardcomputing.folder-snapshot-utility.mac-app-store-versionI don’t plan on using the app since it requires manual interaction. I’m looking for something I can set and forget about it.

Hi, the app has now been completely rewritten. You can now save the snapshots wherever you want, and this can be on any disk - it does not have to be APFS formatted. Best Regards, David.

I recently purchased this app for $4.99 and ran it today. I was disappointed by the experience. I had it make a snapshot of a 400 MB folder (the Sites folder in my Home Folder) and a 500 MB folder (my Google Drive folder). Both times there was absolutely NO indication of what is was doing or if the action was in progress or completed, etc. I even went to check Activity Monitor to see if the app was stuck in the background or something, but by the time I did, the app was apparently done with its job and did not appear in the normal CPU-usage list. I never saw the "Progress" bar shown in screenshot #1 provided in the app description (at the time of this writing). Naturally I wondered where my snapshot was - but could not find it anywhere. It never asked me where I wanted to put the snapshot (my intent originally was to put it on an external volume so I could have an up-to-date backup of the folder on an external drive). I used the Snapshots > Show Snapshots… menu item and could see that it was in the snapshot archive, but I do not know where exactly on my hard drive it is. Perhaps I am using it wrong. I don't want to fill my drive with duplicates of large folders like my 124 GB Dropbox folder which is what I really wanted to snapshot with this app. I want to be able to "snapshot" it to an external drive - like an rsync for folders to an external hard drive. If this is what you are looking for also, this app will not provide your solution at this time.

Hi, there is no indication of progress because snapshots are instantaneous! As you describe, by the time you go to check what it's doing.. it's already done. It is MUCH higher performance than a copy. (If a snapshot takes more than a half second, then you'll get progress bars.) ..........As per your feedback, the app has now been completely rewritten :) now you can save the snapshots wherever you want, on any disk you want. I agree that this is much better.Best Regards, David.
