Description

From the makers of Pokémon GO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is the real-world augmented reality (AR) game inspired by the Wizarding World that puts magic in the hands of players worldwide. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is co-developed and co-published by Niantic, Inc. and WB Games San Francisco as part of Portkey Games, a label dedicated to creating new Wizarding World mobile and video games inspired by J.K. Rowling's original stories that place players at the center of their own adventure.

Realize Your Wizarding Potential
A calamity has befallen the wizarding world, causing Foundables—magical artefacts, creatures, people, and even memories—to mysteriously appear in the Muggle world. As a new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, you’ll work with witches and wizards from across the globe to solve the mystery of The Calamity and keep magic safe from Muggle eyes.

The Magic Is All Around You
As you step outside and explore the world, the Map will reveal Traces of magic that indicate the location of Foundables. These Traces are found at various real-world locations and trigger richly detailed 3D encounters in full 360-degree advanced AR. You’ll need to cast a variety of spells to defeat the confounding magic surrounding the Foundables in order to safely return them to the wizarding world. Keep an eye out for other things that will aid you on your journey including Inns that replenish Spell Energy, ingredients that can be used to brew potions, and even Portkeys that can whisk you away to iconic wizarding world locations.

Stronger United
Gather your friends to take on even bigger magical feats such as Wizarding Challenges, real-time cooperative multiplayer battles against dangerous foes. To overcome the stronger threats and discover rarer Foundables, you’ll need to team up and strategize with your fellow witches and wizards and specialize in different magical Professions—Auror, Magizoologist, and Professor—that each have their own unique skills and abilities that come in handy at different times.

Ready your wand, alert your friends, and be ready to protect the wizarding world from a global calamity. Your Wizarding adventure awaits!

Fun, needs work

It’s a fun enough game, but the mechanics need some work. As many other reviews have said, there need to be more non-monetary/coin ways to refill your spell energy. Maybe a potion that can refill spell energy? Even if it’s one that takes a lot of ingredients and a long time to brew. Maybe once a day you could send energy to your friends? Why can’t spell energy even just slowly refill on its own? Even just like a single point every hour or something (since you guys obviously don’t want to give any energy for free; hell, a single point every 4 hours, I don’t care), and if you are impatient you can still pay coins to get more energy, but if you don’t mind waiting, you can wait. For those of us who live in areas without a whole lot of inns in walking distance and who don’t want to waste all of our coins/ACTUAL MONEY on energy, it’s a real pain to be out of energy all the time.

That said: so far, the story is entertaining, the connections back to beloved characters/the books/the movies have been fun, the art style is playful, and the AR is pretty good if you’re into that. It’s easy enough to pick up if you’re a casual fan of the franchise without feeling like you have no idea what’s going on, but if you’re someone who has religiously consumed every piece of HP media that exists it also doesn’t feel too much like the game is recapping things you already know, since it gets right into “okay, here’s the new story for this game.”

Fun, but frustrating if you live outside the city

Overall, I like the concept of the game. But I have to agree with others who live in suburban or rural areas: it is extremely difficult to regain energy because the nearest greenhouses/inns are too far away to visit on a regular basis. There needs to be other ways to gain energy. Same goes for Spell Books that can only be gained through Wizarding Challenges- I can’t get them because I don’t live near Fortresses. And the greenhouse is basically useless for growing things I need, because they are all too far away to plant things and then revisit 15 hrs later.

Also, potions. If a potion is good for say, 5 spell casts in one battle, but I win the battle in one spell cast, the remaining spell casts should carry over to future battles. Otherwise spending hours brewing a single potion is a waste of time and ingredients.

It would also be nice to know (on screen) when entering a battle, whether or not I already have that complete item in Registry. It’s extremely difficult to remember each item, especially because some items are gained in fragments. For example if I need 12 fragments of Buckbeak but can’t remember if I completed him or not, I have to exit the battle and open my Registry to look up the information. I don’t always want to collect extras simply for experience points, because it wastes spell energy that I can’t replenish because the inns/greenhouses are too far away.

Fun, but unbalanced

I came to this having played Pokémon Go (lv 35) and Ingress (lv 8). I’m currently level 10 in WU. My initial reaction is that this would appeal more to Ingress players who are more comfortable with a game with more bits and pieces to it and PG players wanting more complexity but not wanting to deal with the more strategy and competitive nature of Ingress.

Like others have said, the game is unbalanced with its resources. Spell energy is very lacking if you’re not near any inns. I wish there was some given with rewards and more consistently given in greenhouses. Maybe half energy and half ingredients or if your vault is full, give even 1-3 energy in exchange instead of nothing. I delete about 40+ some ingredients a day if I play that day due to lack of space. I’ve taken to brewing potions just to use some up so I’m not wasting them, but there’s not a whole lot of point in having so many potions when I run out of Spell Energy so fast that I leave most Trace encounters if it’s not one I need. It would be nice if we could pick up energy on the map along with ingredients too, much like Ingress.

My one other gripe is the length of the animations, dialogue, and number of taps to access menus. The greenhouse plant animation at the beginning could be cut by half for example. Fortunately for many, I can speed tap through a lot of these, especially the dialogue. There’s SO much of it...OMG. It’s like playing an RPG from the 90s.
