Wakaru is a powerful study aid, exclusively created for learners of the Japanese language.
Wakaru is equipped with a fully functional WEB BROWSER and an EBOOK READER.
The ebook reader is versatile and allows vertical and horizontal direction of Japanese text layout, various font sizes, customizable text, background colors and textures as well as proper support for Ruby annotations to display furigana for documents that provide them.
Wakaru is integrated with two online Japanese libraries, Aozora Bunko and Hoshizora Bunko, allowing you to browse and download over a total of 18,000 Japanese ebooks directly from the app. These ebooks can be sorted according to their kanji difficulty level to help you find text adapted to your Japanese level. You may also import your own text documents via copy and paste, through iTunes sharing or by downloading directly into the app using the built-in browser.
A popup dictionary is available as an auto-renewable subscription (monthly or yearly).
It can help to make reading and deciphering Japanese text with its robust search algorithm, enabling you to lookup any word simply by touching and highlighting them.
This elegant pop-up displaying the readings as well as the definitions appear without interrupting your flow of reading. You can also save words and review them later with the built-in flashcards module.
Wakaru's popup word lookup comes built-in with the following dictionaries
•Japanese-English Dictionary (165,000 entries)
•Japanese-French Dictionary (15,000 entries)
•Japanese Proper Names Dictionary (700,000 entries)
In addition to that, from the popup dictionary, you can also make cross references in several web dictionaries, namely:
You can also jump from the popup dictionary into a wide range of other popular external dictionary applications directly from Wakaru, making full use of other dictionaries you own. Wakaru currently supports:
•ウィズダム英和・和英辞典 2 (Wisdom 2)
The built-in iOS Dictionary can be accessed directly from the app.

Ratings and Reviews
Edit: updated to reflect that the developer addressed the bugs I pointed out.
The dictionary algorithm works well and is fast. The UX design of the app is not that great, hence 4 stars not 5.
Developer Response ,
One star is a bit harsh, isn't it?
Anyway, those issues have been corrected in the latest release version 2.5.0.
Good but lacking
I really enjoy this app so far, especially the aozora bunker e-reader features. That alone has helped me tremendously in reading more Japanese texts.
However, I would just like to clarify somethings that I feel weren't apparent to me at the time of purchase. The app has 3 features accessible from its main menu; a browser, an e-reader connected to aozora bunko, and study lists. The standalone browser can access websites and use its features like define and add to wordlist. But it doesn't integrate with safari as well as I would like it to. Maybe this is a difficulty created from Apple's end. In safari, you can only define a word and not add it to a wordlist. As a matter of fact, that's the only thing you can do outside of the app itself. Maybe this is only important to me, but I prefer to keep these vocabulary words to review later. I'm finding it a critical default, that I can't add to wordlist outside of the app. If I want to do that, I have to copy the URL from safari, paste it into wakaru's browser, highlight the word, and then add it to a wordlist. It would be great to have the add to wordlist functionality available everywhere, ie safari and mail.
In any case, I look forward to this app and it's improvements.
I recently bought this app and had a problem downloading books. After reporting the problem, the app developer responded really quickly and even told me when the update to fix the problem would be available. Since then, I've been downloading books from Aozora bunko and reading stories such as Cinderella and other stories in Japanese. The book databases can be sorted by difficulty, so it is easier to pick stories that are more appropriate for your level or the reading level you are aiming for. I really enjoy the flash card and dictionary features too, since I can read and look up any words or kanji I don't know as needed as well as have vocabulary list for the books I'm reading.
