It somehow won me over

The biggest problem with this game is the manual. This happens often (Caylus, King Ludwig) where the developers assume either that they don't need to explain things since the app is taking care of it, or assume that everyone already knows how to play and gloss over important details. THIS app completely fails to explain what buddhas are for or how/when to use them, and tells you not to worry about the rules of ghost placement. The first (as it turns out) is one of the most important actions you'll be doing, and the second is important for planning purposes.

So with this, and some other digital board games, you'll need to find the actual manual online and read it. My first plays were just terrible. Like sitting under a landslide.

Once I actually understood how to play the game (no thanks to you, Mr. App) I came back to try again. I've never won, never even seen the boss monster appear. So I'm still losing, but somehow this puzzle has latched onto me and I find, after a break, I'm ready to go again. This is a very interesting game.

Too bad there appears to be no ongoing support and this will disappear with the 64-bit update on IOS 11.

Awful, simply awful

I wish I could give this App a 0. I have played the board game and enjoyed, which is why I got the App. But I am certain the dice rolling aspect is off. I know the math on specific die rolls and am well under half of what I should be after a half dozen games (so well over a hundred die rolls.) I don't believe in "being unlucky", no one is better or worse at rolling dice, but dice rolling programs can be flawed, and this one is.

A second massive flaw is the ability to go back, or more accurately the inability to go back beyond the last thing you just did. There are about a billion things to track in this game and when playing a four character game, it is really easy for these to slip from time to time. The problem is, the go back feature is very poor, and a single mistake can literally cost you an entire game. Needless to say, when it is not uncommon to make a half dozen "mistakes" in a game, this is quite frustrating. A simple prompt that said "Hey stupid, you are about to end the turn and didn't place your Buddha/use your special power/any other number of things that there would be no reason to do. Are you sure you want to continue?" would solve 99% of the problem.

Both of these can be fixed via a patch, so don't buy this App until they are fixed.

You want a challenge?! You can't handle a challenge!

Wow! This game is quite a challenge! Before you purchase this app, make sure you don't get easily discouraged, that you are ready to read and re-read all the rules, and that you understand you will likely play several to many games before winning.

I own a physical copy of the game and feel this is a faithful digital reproduction. I have used the digital version's enforcement of rules to hone my understanding of the rules.

I can't speak to the true randomness of die rolls, but I can't think of a digital game with dice that doesn't suffer this complaint. What I can say is that I have won (solo with Green) in spite of the random number algorithm.

I give the game 4 rather than 5 stars because I think the UI could be improved. I found myself wondering why certain options didn't seem to be available at times. These instances were rules enforcement, but it was difficult to tell. I also believe a tutorial would greatly benefit the game.

You want a challenge?! Well, good luck!
