Description

Behold the first completely FREE IPA keyboard on the App Store designed for linguists, language learners, and hobbyists.

It is designed to be lightweight and fluid, matching up to the user experience of the system emoji keyboard.

=FEATURES=

- Includes ALL symbols on the newest standard IPA chart (2020 ver.)

- Includes most symbols (the ones available in Unicode) on the newest standard extIPA chart (2016 ver.)

- Symbols are divided into sections just like the IPA chart(-duh!): consonants, non-pulmonic, other symbols, vowels, suprasegmentals, tones and word accents, and diacritics

- Symbols are arranged naturally, with a layout designed for you to find the symbols you want more quickly (especially the vowels, it's cleverly designed to match the layout on the IPA chart)

- Convenient input for "[]", "//", "~", "◌", space, and return on the top of the keyboard

- Completely free, NO ADS

I love the layout and flexibility this has, I make conlangs and this allows me to do a lot of fun stuff on the go, and it accomodates a lot of characters and diacritics I haven’t had easy access to before. The one issue I have with it is no return key. I’ve looked and maybe I’ve missed something, but this makes the keyboard incredibly inconvenient for me. I have to switch layouts just to go to another line or type a ton of spaces. The addition of a return key would make this review five stars and I’d love this board forever. If this doesn’t bother you, then this is the IPA board you’re looking for.

(update)

The return key is now available in version 1.0.1.

I didn’t consider the return key because I originally modeled the layout after the system emoji keyboard.

It seems that your suggestion makes sense. I’ll look into where to put the return key on the keyboard (perhaps next to the space key?), ask others for feedback, and probably add it in the next update.

Probably the best app I have

I primarily use this for conlanging but it's great for lots of things. Super intuitive layout, super functional, etc. I have a suggestion though that would make it even better: since I imagine most of us use this app to transcribe mostly one language (at least at a time), be it real or a conlang, It would be nice if you could choose a subset of the characters to appear on a normal sized keyboard, for typing languages, since its unfortunately pretty slow to scroll thru all the characters you don't use for the few you do (which is definitely the only real way to make a keyboard w all the ipa on it and the best choice). If u could add a few options (for people working on a few langs at once) that would be sick too. Not sure how easy or possible that would b to implement but hope something can happen with it :)

If you consider the price (free), this app is perfect

ðɪsʰ æpsʰ ɡɻʷɛɪt

It doesn't just focus on English phonemes -- you can actually type quite a lot and there are even functional diacritics. The app is very sleek and arranges the characters in a sensible manner. There are minimal labels which creates a small initial hurdle, but I appreciate the minimalism now that I am accustomed to the app.

The only major criticism I have is that if you try to sandwich a consonant between two dental diacritics (to form an interdental), the app you are using may crash. You can use the advance symbol < ̟> to circumvent this in some cases, but it isn't immediately obvious how one would go about typing a bidental percussive.

Thank you so much for your feedback!
extIPA symbols and obsolete symbols will be added next update.
