Description

Explore a 3D globe of Mars

The imagery is at a higher resolution than the iOS version too

Mars Atlas is an astronomy application that lets you use the mouse or pinch and finger gestures to manipulate a 3D globe of Mars. As you zoom in more labels appear as finer detail comes into view. You can double tap on the labels to get more information about a particular feature.

Mars Atlas displays the approximate phase, axial tilt and central meridian of Mars from your chosen location and time, and renders these on the globe. You can switch to a 'Globe' mode that allows you to spin Mars around to see the whole globe. The feature database is searchable and can move the globe to a searched feature. The phase can be switched off to show the whole globe more clearly.

Date, time and location can be changed. There is also a realtime mode that will update to the current time.

The Mars globe can be shown with north or south at the top or inverted to suit different telescope views.

Over 1600 named features are included as well as 6 spacecraft that returned data from the surface of Mars. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity have their locations updated at startup.

Very Twitchy App, not worth the $

This app jerks and twitches everytime you touch the mouse pad.
Very difficult to focus in on specific features.
Was expecting higher resolution images.
Rather surprised at the amateurish nature of the app.
Lacks any substantial info about features being observed.
Really not worth the cost.

Alright but not Great

While a promising app, Mars Atlas needs a few tweeks and additions to make it a good app worth paying for. Here is a short list:

1) Many of the descriptions are lacking, to say the least. Descriptions are basically “Classical Albedo Feature Name” and rarely little more than that. I realize it’s a lot of work to put in details worth reading, but for the cost of the app I don’t think it’s asking too much.

2) Make a click-on-name-for-info option. Right now, if you find a geological item of interest you can’t click on it to find out more but rather you have to type the name in a search bar. Again, no really useful or interesting info is displayed in the “info” box.

3) Add an altitude overlay. Right now there are only two map views - Globe and Flat Image - which leaves the map content a little lack-luster.

4) Date/Time & Location options are of Earth… This is a Mars app. Maybe do something to make this info more relevant to Mars (e.g. when is the next time Mars is visible for your location, current celestial coordinates, etc…).

I don’t completely regret paying for the app, however there are better free apps apps available, like Google Mars.

Useful For Mars Opposition!

There aren't many Mars apps that simply give you Mars on a Mac. Yes, there are planetarium programs that can do the same thing and even direct your computerized telescope to find Mars. But this is elegant in it's simplisity, I can show it on my 15 inch Macbook Pro at any time so it's nice and large. Additionally, during Mars opposition when it's closest to Earth, I can launch the app and it will show me what surface features I can expect to see each night! Zooming in, it reveals more features than I'm able to see in my telescope and seems stable on my 2014 Macbook Pro Retina. It's a winner for this Mars aficionado!
