Description

A dystopian survival experience inspired by George Orwell's 1984.

In Monthly Dystopia, you need to find a way to survive in an authoritarian world. You can serve the dictatorship by being a model citizen or you can try to flee the country by cooperating with the Resistance. You live under a regime in which love is forbidden and using words banned by the Party is punishable by death. Choose your words wisely if you don't want to commit a thought crime. Remember, there's always a screen watching you. The paycheck from your job at the ministry editing the past is barely enough to buy the food needed to keep you alive, so it is crucial that you find a way to flee this dystopia where even thinking is forbidden.

You can serve as a loyal citizen, fall in love and constantly fear getting caught, work with the Resistance against the dictatorship, and choose freedom or servitude.

The daily tasks you perform in your apartment are your only way to survive. Remember that your time is just as limited as your supplies. You'll have to choose between cooking before going to work, taking medication for your illness, or doing activities that benefit your mental state. You can try to protect the people around you by making conscientious decisions or you can escape this dystopia by sacrificing them.

Haven’t even got to half an hour of game play and I am absolutely at awe at how good this game looks, sounds and plays. You truly will feel immersed with in a few minutes of game play. I can’t tell that there was a load of effort to create this game.

Nice Atmosphere, Limited Story

The positives of this game definitely revolve around its atmosphere, and its ability to recreate the oppressive, tyrannical world of 1984. You can tell the environments were hand crafted, and I enjoyed each reference to the book. I also liked the system of having 30 days, so you felt like you had to live each day and survive under the eye of Big Brother.

With that said, the story is extremely limited. Yes, the characters in 1984 had to be careful about when they spoke, but they still had plenty of conversations. In this game, you go from saying one sentence to Julia at work, to complimenting her eyes twice, to suddenly she’s removing her clothes.

There’s no buildup for anything that happens, events just happen suddenly and you either survive and the game ends, or you’re caught by the Thought Police and the game ends. It’s nice that there’s different endings, but again, the endings are so abrupt that there’s not much motivation to replay to see them all.

Overall, I would only recommend this game to big fans of 1984, because the recreation of that world is where most of the enjoyment comes from.

Needs more

There’s such a small amount of atmosphere that it becomes dreadfully repetitive. You do the same thing every day and going to work seems awfully tedious for no apparent reason. There’s no opportunities to go out to a pub or see things in downtime. That brings me to the time management there’s some days i can only do one or two things before work and it becomes less of a game mechanic and feels like more of a bug. Lastly, it appears that my grandfather has no need to eat food, ever. Other than that good game just needs a little expansion and a good old polish.
