In the 4th century after the Hijrah a number of works were written outlining the issues of Tajwīd as distinct science. However, the science of Tajwīd was taught orally with the Qur’ān before that; a student would recite the Qur’ān over and over again to his teacher until he attained proficiency in his recitation. Indeed, the science of Tajwīd is one of the most important sciences due to its connection to the Speech of Allāh. The scholars have stated that studying its theory is a communal obligation, whereas actually implementing it is an individual obligation for every person who wishes to recite some portion of the Qur’ān. For this reason scholars have paid great attention to producing works concerning this science, both in prose and poetry, in concise works as well as lengthier works, in order to alert people how to correctly recite and prevent them from falling into some sort deficiency when reciting. The first person to actually write in the science of Tajwīd was Abū Muzāhim al-Khāqāni (d. 325 AH), who wrote a poem consisting of 51 lines which comprised some topics of Tajwīd, even though he never actually utilised this particular terminology, indicating that it was not widespread at his time. Then as-Saīdi Ali bin Ja'far who died 410 roughly. Titled his book: At-Tanbīh 'ala Al-Lahn Al-Kaafī and Ikhtilāf al-Qurrā’ fī Al-Lām wa An-Nūn. Thereafter: Makki bin Abū Tālib al-Qaysi (d. 437 AH) wrote ar-Ri`āyah li-Tajwīd al-Qirā’ah wa Tahqīq Lafdh at-Tilāwah. Abū al-Fadhl ar-Rāzi (d. 454 AH) wrote a book in Tajwīd. 'Abd ‘l-Wahhāb al-Qurtubi (d. 462 AH) wrote al-Muwadhdih fī at-Tajwīd. Some scholars have enumerated more than 100 books and treatises concerning the science of Tajwīd, some of which are found in manuscripts whilst others have been published. About the Al Muqaddimah Al-Jazariyyah Poem It is a poem concerning the science of Tajwīd on the rajaz poetic metre.
