Description

Explore tones, drones, textures and soundscapes with Nonatone, a synthesizer with nine independently controlled, open gate oscillators (3 saw waves, 3 square waves and 3 sine waves), as well as a combined global low pass filter and volume control

Nonatone is focused on simplicity and playability above all else, with intuitive, responsive controls that allow you to easily shape your sound, and reshape it live as a human modulator.
Operation is simple. Drag an oscillator up to increase it’s frequency, and down to decrease it. If the frequency gets low enough, the oscillator will deactivate. And that’s it, nine times over

No theory, no patches, no complicated setup, just you and your oscillators

Includes an Audio Unit v3 plugin which plays nicely with external effects (I particularly enjoy using it with a shimmer reverb)

Note: The Nonatone AU is a "generator", which means it outputs audio without any midi input (or output), which means it won't work in AU hosts such as GarageBand, which are midi based. Audio based AU hosts, such as AUM, will work fine however

What’s New

Version 2.0

- NEW: AU Parameters
For power users, you now have a total of 20 AU Parameters to control and automate, including 1 for the volume/filter controls, 1 for each of the nine oscillator frequencies, 1 for the global reverb and 1 for each of the nine oscillator amplitudes

- FIXED: State Saving
A nice side effect of new using AU Parameters is that your state is saved between sessions when using the audio unit extension

- NEW: iOS 14+ Support

- FIXED: Screen wake
When your using the standalone app, the screen will no longer dim and turn off

It seems awesome but…..

Would give it 5 stars and will update to 5 if they get it to work on Logic iOS. Watched How To App by Jade Starr and bought it immediately. It does work randomly but I can’t play notes, make stems from it the sounds or use it how it’s meant to be used. When it did work though, I could play around with it and see the capabilities but just couldn’t save my work in any format.
I love it so far, when it works and would recommend it to anyone who likes making their own sound designs or if you just enjoy making cool meditation/ambient soundscapes. Hope it will get an update soon so I can use it more.

Developer Response ,

Hey, cheers for the review! So the thing is, its a generator audio unit, which means it doesn't accept midi input but rather creates sound on its own (there's a note about it in the description), which would explain why it doesn't work in logic and why it won't work with playing notes. Not sure about the issue with saving, it should save state using parameters but again that might depend on your audio unit host app.

Sweet drone and chord generator.

Cool idea! Here’s my immediate feedback:
Add pitch and mod strips to the left side. Synth players are accustomed to this and it would add more playability and dynamics to the instrument.
Split the filter and volume into two separate controls (to match my first suggestion of the pitch and mod strips), but have a user option to keep them linked.
Allow the user to tap in the square and have the pitch jump to that pitch. Similar to how Koala FX works.
Without dumping too many feature suggestions on you, but maybe in future updates allow presets scales and root notes for each oscillator row. This could allow for many interesting chords and harmonic interaction. 🤘🏼

Hey, cheers for the review, glad you're enjoying it!
I want to keep the UI as simple and clean as possible so it's unlikely I'll be adding much to it. Lets be realistic, there are some incredibly powerful drone apps already out there, if I try to turn Nonatone into a powerhouse it'll just end up being a worse version of them, so I'm going down the other route of keeping things clean and simple.
That being said, there is some interesting stuff for power users like you coming. In the next update, I'm exposing as much as the app as I can with audio unit parameters, so you can build some really complex stuff without it affecting the core UI.
Hopefully this ends up being a compromise which works for the both of us 😀

Cheers!
Tom
