Description

Plot is a scientific 2D plotting program.

This project started in 1993 with SciPlot on NeXTStep and continues with "Plot" for OS X till 2007.

Plot is designed for everyday plotting, it is easy to use, it creates high quality plots, and it allows easy and powerful manipulations and calculations of data.

Basically Plot allows to work with multiple documents where every document consists of one or more XY data sets (called buffer in Plot).

There is also the possibility to add subviews (plots inside plots) to your document. A subview is completely independent with its own data buffers, graphic attributes etc.

Data can be imported from text or binary files, with a Perl based import filter. It is also possible to import data by using copy&paste or drag&drop from other programs.

Plot supports many plotting styles like lines, symbols, grids, bars, filled areas, sticks, dots, histograms, error bars, automatic legend, text and graphic objects, etc.

Plot can import images from other programs with copy&paste or drag&drop.

Plot has many data manipulation methods integrated: smooth, spline interpolation, differentiation, integration, normalising, moving, data calculations, function generator, curve fitting, etc.

Plot has also a built in macro language for automating complex tasks.

Powerful but complicated

Plot2 is a very versatile tool that can make very detailed and customized plots. I use it for creating plots for scientific publications and it blows Excel out of the water. The most complex figure I have made so far with this tool is a 9-pane plot with 2-5 data series per pane. Plot2 handed this with no issues........once I knew how to do it.

This leads me to the next part of the review, Plot2 is not easy to use at the beginning. It will take several hours of fiddling with the interface to figure out how everything works. There is logic to the way plots are created but it will not be apparent right away. This is nothing like excel where you can just highlight data and after a couple of clicks you have something usable. Once you know how to use the interface though the possibilities are endless.

For a mac user this is the best graphical software you can get for free.

Plot is truly the best - no comparison!

As an academic researcher I have used this program in different incarnations (since SciPlot in NeXTStep) for the last 25+ years. It is the most powerful, fast and usable 2D plotting program I have found. I tried many others (paid, share- and freeware, GUI and command line alike) over the years but I always go back to Plot. It provides full control to all the features of the plot, including tiled graphs, powerful data manipulation, annotation, curve fitting on the fly, peak analysis, remote database access, a powerful scripting language to automate processing and many other. Written from the core to manipulate postcript/PDF, it produces lightweight graphics that can be added easily to the text editor of your choice (from LaTex to Word). Yes, it has so many features that it seems daunting at first, but the quality of the graphs is well worth the time investment. Need I say more? Yes! the developer has always been most responsive to address bugs and feature requests over the years. I cannot think of a better piece of software. Look no further, you will fall in love as I have over all these years!

Again the app is great, but has updating problem.

The 2.2.1 update to Plot2 keeps showing up in the Updates window even after the 2.2.1 update is applied. Also the version number within the updated app remains at 2.2.0 and isn’t updated to 2.2.1. Maybe this is part of the problem. This is a very nice graphing app with lots of useful features that I would give 5 stars, if it weren’t for this continual updating cycle that it’s in right now. Please correct and fix (and update the correct version number within the app itself).

Developer Response ,

Unfortunately I have no influence to the behaviour of the AppStore and I can't help in this case. Hopefully Apple will fix this issue soon.
