It's hard to get a feel for what this app does from the description and the Screen Shots. In short, you can create a text file with this app and add entries to it very quickly through its efficient streamlined interface.What the description doesn't tell you is the details of how this works. You can choose to save the text file anywhere you like. Or you can choose an existing text file for this app to manage and update. Note: When selected an existing file, the OS will warn you that you are about to overwrite the file. This isn't the case. The app will not overwrite the file, but rather add it to its list of text files that it is managing which you can select from its UI. Then you can quickly make entries into any of the text files you've told it about.Very clever idea and an app I didn't know I needed, but now love.

When I’m in focus mode, I have thoughts. And with this app I can capture those brilliant ideas that won’t be ignored without taking my fingers off the keyboard. I press of a hotkey, type my thought, hit enter, and don’t even break rhythm. Type automatically adds a timestamp and saves the note in a markdown file. I add the entries to an existing note that becomes my running log (or brain dump, if you prefer). It makes a great quick-entry workflow for a text-based app like iA Writer (which I use) or Obsidian (It’s not that hard to configure a Shortcut to do this, but now I don’t have to!) I also like that this is an independent developer and a one-time purchase. I bought the app about an hour into the 7-day free trial.

There’s always a balance with apps like this between power and simplicity, and right now it is firmly on the simple side of that spectrum. I’m hoping the developers can add a couple small features to make it more powerful while keeping it simple. My primary need would be to be able to control the text file when you update it. For instance, since I primarily use this with Markdown, I’d love to be able to put a # in front of date stamps in order to make that a header tag, thus managing that file more easily (e.g. if I open it in Obsidian, having that tag would create a more easily-navigable outline). Ideally, this would take the form of a panel in the settings pane that allows custom scripting with bash, python, javascript, or even regex.

While I still need to bake my habit a bit more, Type provides a seamless interface to getting your thoughts out of your head so you can focus on the task at hand without worrying you'll forget your thought or becoming distracted.
