Description

Tardigrain is a granular synthesiser for iOS that runs standalone or as an AU plugin. Sounds are created by taking smaller fragments of a sample and playing them back in a non linear fashion, with settings for grain size, direction, step size and more. Process the sound further through effects like reverb, wave shaper and sample crush. Tardigrain supports connections with AudioCopy, AudioBus, Inter App Audio and AUv3. Plus all audio parameters can be modulated by MIDI, as AU parameters and by aftertouch on the build in keyboard. Now also a selected set of parameters can be modulated by LFOs och notes triggered by a new sequencer/arpeggiator.

+++ Record your own samples or import using AudioCopy/drag'n drop
+++ Chromatic granualar playpack
+++ Effects (Wave shaper, Reverb, Sample crusher, Pitch and stereo spread)
+++ Resonant filter (low, band and high pass)
+++ Keyboard and MPE modulation of any audio parameters
+++ Note trigger sequencer/arpeggiator
+++ 4 LFO sources for modulating a selected set of parameters
+++ Multiple factory presets to get you started
+++ Save and load your own settings and samples
+++ Inter App Audio, AudioBus and AUv3
+++ Core MIDI, Inter App Audio MIDI and AUv3 MIDI

Coming back with a whole new level of appreciation...

When I first downloaded this app, I was still quite new to ios music production and frankly, music production in general. At that time, I remember thinking “oh, this is cool! Weird sounds, clean interface, no clue what I’m doing but it sounds pretty good and I’m having fun”.

Then I essentially forgot about the app for the next several months, despite it always coming up in the app store as suggested when looking for other apps that would usually end up disappointing me(especially when Ive looked for other granular synths).

Came back to this gem today and man, I’m completely blown away at how good it really is. To be fair, I still don’t know what the hell I’m doing but I’ve at least fumbled around, not knowing what I’m doing, quite a bit now. I’ve used A LOT of ios music production apps since I got this one and i just have a way bigger appreciation for it now. Not just the ease of use and beautiful interface but also THE SOUNDS! Epic sounds.

This thing is better than any of the other granulars I’ve tried on ios. I won’t name names but I have all the big granulars for ios let’s say “the big 4 granular apps”. This one is my favorite hands-down.

Well done. Thank you!

Almost forgot... It also plays very well with others! I’m using it primarily Nanostudio2 at the moment. Just purchased “The Humble Bunde” (Several of the developers other apps). Let’’s support this Dev’s hard work - amazing!

Smooooth Touch Update on this Fantastic Synth

Tardigrain has been a home run from the get go. The synth engine makes it incredibly easy to get a wide range of sustained sounds out of virtually any sound material. The UI is also brilliant: beautiful, uncluttered, powerful. The touch keyboard + chords layout is just wonderful - I honestly wish I could use it with other iOS synths.

The issue this update fixes - touch response problems with the edges, often making the controls finicky - was an annoyance that I really didn’t mind putting up with given how amazing this app is. Until this fix, I had no idea just how much better this would make the app feel. This is an unexpectedly awesome quality of life improvement to an already awesome app.

Kudos for figuring out how to make a second home run out of tardigrain.

Interestingly subtle❣️

Update: The developer quickly fixed the inability topick the last waveform on the side pull-over panel as the IAA icon covers it on the IAA transport control panel. Now I can also just do a single touch to pull out the side bar. 👍

It’s still annoying having part of the audiogram covered. Just make it a callapsible pull out menu. The UI will look cleaner too.

Oh, I forgot. I still can’t get any audio through tardigrain used as an AU.

Now off for some more ‘sonic seasonings’ tardigrain style❣️

While some interesting sounds are to be had with the tardigrain app, there are some serious UI design issues. First, you can’t pick the last waveform on the side pull-over panel as the IAA icon covers it on the IAA transport control panel. Both the control icon panel and the IAA transport panel overlay the audiogram, which is your working area. Both of those groups of icons, ideally, should be collapsible pullout panels like the one they have, but to be able to ‘just touch’ the expansion icon to expand for access, like many other sound/synth/audio apps developers do.

The pull-over panel on the right, as it is now, can take anywhere from 2-3 touch/pulls to as many as 8-10 tries on my iPad Pro on iOS 11. A real pain. I think the strength of tardigrain may lie in the flexibility of the sound source. Trying to use tardigrain as an AU, so far, as soon as I engage it I lose all sound no matter what I do.
