Use your Mac to type on your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV
Type2Phone works just like a Bluetooth keyboard: no additional app is needed.

• Use your Mac's full-sized keyboard with your iPhone and iPad
• Paste passwords, addresses, etc. from your Mac to your mobile device
• Type texts, tweets, status updates, etc.
• Reply to emails on accounts configured only on your iOS device
• Control your Apple TV
• Use a single keyboard with all your Apple devices

4th generation Apple TV requires tvOS 9.2 to enable Bluetooth keyboard support.

## Features:

• Connects automatically as you start typing
• Disconnects when idle or sent to the background (optional)
• Command-Tab in and out of Type2Phone
• Customizable keyboard shortcuts for all your devices
• Copy-paste text from Mac to iPhone, iPad or Apple TV
• AppleScript to automate text input
• Support for Mac OS X dictation (10.8 or later)
• Support for TextExpander on Mac

## Get started in 3 easy steps:

• On your Mac, open System Preferences > Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is on and discoverable. Leave System Presences open.
• Start Type2Phone. Leave it running and frontmost.
• On the iOS device, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Tap the name of your Mac to start the pairing procedure.

Please note: If your Mac and iOS device had been previously paired, you first need to undo the pairing on both ends. Have each device forget the other. Then go through the above procedure.

One of my favorite apps

This is awesome and very simple, basically it just turns your Mac into a bluetooth keyboard when you activate the app. Of course it's designed for iOS but I think it should work with any device that can use a BT keyboard. (I just did a quick test on my Fire TV and it works on there.) Once you set up the initial BT connection, this will easily and quickly disconnect and reconnect the keyboard whenever you launch the app and/or move it to/from the background. This also supports multiple devices - just select the one you want it connected to from a dropdown.

And for people that have issues with this app, remember it is JUST a BT keyboard. It can't do anything on your phone that a standalone keyboard couldn't do. Of course the advantage of this is that no app needs to be installed on the phone so it should work seamlessly no matter what version of iOS or what type of device you're using.

Works great, but sometimes won't "let go" of the connection

I use this app every day, and after upgrading to Mojave, I reported a bug that caused the app to stop working completely. The developers submitted a fix within 4 days, and now it's working again. I wish all developers would respond that quickly.
Update: The latest version (3.1.2) has a bug. When I switch away from the app on my iMac, the Bluetooth trackpad becomes unresponsive for up to 30 seconds unless I quit the app. It is severing the trackpad's connection because not only does the pointer not move, the haptic "click" is gone, too.
Update: I am lowering my rating to just one star. The current version of this app disrupts all of my Bluetooth connections when I switch away from it to a different app. Even when I quit the app, Bluetooth is disrupted, especially with my magic trackpad 2, until I turn off the trackpad and then back on.

Type2Phone 3.1 had a bug that caused it to crash on launch. macOS then reported the app damaged. This bug has been fixed in 3.1.1

It's not just the ugly & clunky UI that I hate. This app FORCIBLY closes the keyboard on your phone whenever you connect. This creates an unbelievably bad user experience, because it causes problems with some apps (where the are where your text goes gets hidden too) and where you can't just pick up your phone and type if you want to.

It's also really bad if you switch languages, because you have to switch in this app AND in the keyboard on the phone. You can't do that if the keyboard is hidden. And why doesn't the app do that for you? If I switch to the Portuguese/Brazilian keyboard in the app, can't you at least give me the option of switching automatically to the same keyboard on the phone?

There are lots of little problems with this, but those above are the worst, and they bite me every time I use it.

Type2Phone connects as a Bluetooth keyboard to your iOS device. iPhone then hides the on-screen software keyboard to give your app more room. It does that for all Bluetooth keyboards. You cannot disable this iOS feature. Type2Phone however gives you menu item to reveal the software keyboard. Type2Phone also allows you to quickly disconnect from your phone - causing the software keyboard to re-appera - and automatically reconnects as you start typing.

Please ask the developers of problematic apps to support Bluetooth keyboards.

"Being a Bluetooth keyboard", Type2Phone cannot know the keyboard layouts you have configured on your phone. A keyboard cannot tell the phone: switch to Brazilian. With Type2Phone, switching layouts however is rarely necessary. It takes care of "translating" between layouts. You can have a Brazilian layout on your Mac and have Type2Phone use a Portuguese layout when talking to your iPhone.
