Eye candy but a money milking Maschine too.

I’m a huge fan of the series for more than 15 years. I was pretty excited to play the game as soon as I’ve heard the news. The game is quite graphically polished and the overall feel to the game is quite alright. There’s a simple gameplay mechanics that requires you to simply press the same spot couple of times in order to fill a limit bar with ‘energy’ points to reach a partial level of the task, and then repeat the same until the whole bar is filled up with ‘energy’ points. Per task you have to fill couple of bars to finish the ‘adventure’. The problem is you have exactly 24 ‘energy points’ and adventure requires more than often a number higher than 24, meaning you’ll get stuck a lot waiting for the energy points to refill with time (1 energy point = 4 minutes), furthermore every ‘adventure’ has a time limit on it’s own (minimally an hour up until eight, meaning that probably later in the game you can fail to manage the task but I’m not sure as it still didn’t happen to me).

You can see the pattern here, get into the task, press couple of times, draw a shape with finger, and do it until you use the ‘energy points’, then wait 4min per point to finish the task. That is if you don’t want to pay. The energy points are sold for double amount of pink diamonds (ca. 100 pink diamonds = 55 energy points) and pink diamonds cost € or $ (25 diamonds = 1.09€, 275 diamonds = 11€ … 3125 diamonds = 111€ ). Basically whatever you pay to get the worth in diamonds will get you half of the worth in energy points which you actually need to advance further in game. Nice little trick to get the players not pay too much attention on worth.

Next thing, which I find quite cunning actually. You tend to spend energy points for actions quite quickly and in crucial points where you are also under time pressure. A part of the game directed me towards the trap where you get captured by Devil’s Snare, the plant literally starts choking you and as you fight the plant all of a sudden you’re out of energy points. Observing your character getting choked the game offers you the option of buying more diamonds to exchange them for energy points. I’m 30 year old guy who’s been a fan for years and I panicked there for a sec, first thought it came to me - if I was 13 year old kid or younger I would be already buying the cheapest package so I can battle the plant further and save the character, other option is let him choke for another 16 minutes (which I chose but it felt wrong - scenery was quite ‘graphic’) and waited until energy points refilled.

Anyways, looks great, gives a nostalgic feeling of an adventure and it wants to mercilessly strip the money from your account. I didn’t mind getting choked for those 16mins but I would keep the game far from the kids. And don’t get me wrong we the fans should support the product if we want to play it but the game is created to get the loads of money out of you in order to enjoy a simple experience of Hogwarts. AAA games like God of War and Zelda offer way much more for only ca. 60-70€ ($). I can’t help but to think that a team of greedy Slytherins were crafting the game.
