Spell Star is a four-app phonics spelling series from PLD Literacy & Learning, developed by Australian speech pathologists and educators to help children build strong early spelling foundations through explicit, systematic phonics instruction.
Designed for children aged 5 to 7 years, the series provides a structured progression from simple CVC words through to more advanced phonics patterns. Children develop spelling confidence by learning to segment sounds, encode words and apply phonics knowledge through engaging, interactive gameplay.

Unlike many early literacy apps, Spell Star focuses on pure speech sounds rather than letter names, helping children develop accurate spelling habits and strong phonemic awareness from the beginning.
The Spell Star Series Includes:
Spell Star 1a: CVC Words
The first app in the series introduces children to spelling simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words such as cat, dog, sit and bug.
Children learn to segment sounds and encode words through structured practice, building confidence with early spelling skills while developing strong phonics foundations.
Spell Star 1b: Digraphs
The second app extends children’s spelling skills with common digraphs and vowel patterns including sh, ch, th, ck, ee and oo.
Children practise segmenting sounds and spelling words such as ship, chat, teeth, look and them, strengthening phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge.
Spell Star 1c: CCVC & CVCC Words
The third app develops more advanced spelling skills through consonant blends and complex word structures.
Children practise spelling CCVC words such as frog, spot and club, and CVCC words such as lift, tent and lamp, building confidence with increasingly complex words.
Spell Star 1d: Extended Vowel Patterns
The fourth and final app supports children as they develop spelling accuracy with extended vowel patterns including ar, or, ai, ay and oi.
Children practise spelling words such as start, north, paint, stay and coin while strengthening their understanding of advanced phonics patterns.
