■ FAQ
‣ Can I edit the text in the app?
I don't plan to support any editing. Export the transcription and edit it in a proper text editor.
‣ Why is the app so large?
The app delivers the highest quality transcription on the market for 100 different languages. Rather than asking why it's so large, the real question is how is it so small.
‣ Why is the transcription so slow?
The favors accuracy over speed. However, performance is expected to improve in the coming months.
‣ Can I delete some of the languages to save space?
This is unfortunately not possible. The model has all the languages stored together in a way that makes it impossible to remove just some languages.

■ Technical details
The app uses the Whisper large v2 model on macOS and the medium or small model on iOS depending on available memory.
■ Privacy
The transcription is done locally on your device. Nothing leaves your device. The app is not even able to connect to the internet due to self-imposed restrictions that are enforced by macOS (no network entitlement).

Mind Blowing
I can't thank the developer enough for this app. I'm using it for the first time right now and inputting the audio from a class which was just absolutely confusing. I wanted to revisit what the lecturer was talking about later but knew I wouldn't get around to actually listening to the recording, but just dragged and dropped it into Aiko and it's transcribed the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, there's still mistakes here and there, but it's unlike anything I've seen before. It's not complete garbage like Apple's native dictate, Google Docs dictate or Microsoft Word Dictate, it actually knows what's going on - and it does a pretty good job with punctuation too.
I just hope it remains like this. I will be so sad if they flip to a subscription model of the app.
Outstanding work
Thank you Sindre for creating Aiko. You have provided 'on-device' transcription to the masses, by leveraging open source AI models in an app that is dead simple to use and fast, optimised using Apple Silicon GPUs. And each release adds more and more useful features. The latest, a simple 'time remaining' predictor is great. My only outstanding wish is for Aiko to support diarisation, which I understand will rely on the underlying AI technology you are using.
Works perfectly
This app transcribed four recordings perfectly, without asking for donations or harrasing for ratings. It does exactly what you want, with the least amount of fuss and a really basic interface that requires no instruction. It's fantastic. Highly recommended. A Thank you, developer.
