Did you know there's also an Air Display app in the iOS App Store that turns your iPad or iPhone into a Mac monitor?
Note: The host software requires an Intel-based Mac.
Air Display lets you use a spare Mac’s screen as an extra display for your main Mac.
It's easy to use! Just launch this app on your spare Mac, then connect to it from the free host app on your main Mac, to instantly expand its screen real estate. You can connect wirelessly or with a cable.
IMPORTANT: This is NOT the free Air Display host software that you need on your main computer. You can download that at avatron.com/gethost. This is the client app that turns one Mac into a second monitor for another Mac.

–– INSTALLATION ––
Just install the free Air Display host app (from avatron.com/gethost) on your main Mac, and download this Air Display client app on your second Mac.
• Purchase this app on the Mac you want to use as your second display
• On your main computer, go to avatron.com/gethost and install the free host app
• You can install this app onto multiple Macs, as long as they use the same Apple ID
If you want to use your iPad or other device as your second screen, you do not need to purchase this app. Air Display for iOS is available in the iTunes App Store (and you’ll still need the same free host software on your main computer).
–– COMPATIBILITY ––
• Both computers must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or connected via Ethernet, Thunderbolt, or USB-C
• Mac client app: macOS 10.8 and above
• Mac host: macOS 10.10 and above (not compatible with macOS 10.13.4–10.13.6)
• The Air Display host software is not compatible with Windows

I ignored that most of the review are one star...
This would not work properly. It would not link to my iPads, except by USB cable, even though it was supposed to connect over the network. When I tried to connect over the network, it would say that the device was no longer available.
I had two iPads briefly working. Then I unplugged one and plugged it back in. It would not reconnect. The app instructed me to go to Setting, then Privacy and then allow the Air Display *Host* to allow screen recording. The Air Display *Helper* was on the list, but not the host. The Helper was already ticked.
The app forgets your default monitor placement if you unplug one of them.
You can guess what I think of then "engineers" who charged A$22 for this.
Hugely Disappointing
It often fails to launch the host software on either Mac. When it does the mouse often doesn't appear. And the screen refresh rate is annoyingly slow.
The developer FAQ's are pretty useless too. I would not recommend this.
Perfect solution
Working from home created challenges. This software easily connected my new MacBook Pro to my very slow old 2009 iMac. I now have a large screen area to enable multiple windows. My iMac has a new life too. Had an issue with Mouse lag and contacted support - immediate response and solved the issue for me. Thrilled with the outcome!!
