BBEdit offers a 30-day evaluation period (beginning the first time you use it on your computer), during which its full feature set is available.
During the evaluation period, BBEdit is fully functional. After the evaluation period has expired, you can continue to use BBEdit for free, forever, with no nag screens or unsolicited interruptions.
In “free mode”, BBEdit provides a modified set of features, which incorporates a powerful set of core features. Using BBEdit in free mode costs you nothing, while providing an upgrade path to advanced features and capabilities.
To enable BBEdit’s advanced features after the evaluation period is over, you will need to have an active BBEdit subscription. Subscriptions are available on either a monthly or annual basis.
An active subscription gives you access to all of BBEdit’s advanced features, including any new features that we introduce during updates or major upgrades, for as long as the subscription is in good standing.

This maintenance update is recommended for all BBEdit 15 customers, and includes changes to address reported issues, as well as performance and stability improvements. This update also includes improvements to: the Minimap, Find Differences, R language syntax coloring, and interactions with macOS security measures.

BBEdit 15 is a major upgrade, which includes a variety of new features, internal improvements, and refinements. Close - almost
As an avid notepad ++ fan this is the closest we've got. BUT, there are several things that I feel this lacks which would make all the difference between good, and EXCELLENT.
Firstly, I like how I can doubleclick <div> and it highlights the whole block up until </div> in notepad ++. This dosn't do that.
Secondly I like in Notepad ++ how it automatically draws lines on the left side of the code to show the begining and end of the curly bracket code { } . You can double click on this app and it will highlight code curly bracket code but it's just not quite the same.
In terms of speed, this is pretty good.
But, going from a FREE editlor, like notepad ++ to having to spend 50+ bucks on a paid editor and not having the same functionality is slightly dissapointing.
Having said that, I feel that this kills Adobe's offerings. Which, for their price, are horrificly cumbersome. 8/10. Best editor I've found on the mac so far. If those enhancements I mentioned above were in this app you'd get a 10 for sure.
The ONly Text Editor You Need
Although my regular use of BBEdit is limited to a small subset of itscapabilities, I know there is tremendous power available to me when I need it.
I am constantly delighted by the code-folding and syntax colouring that happens automatically - so useful in understanding your code's structure. Likewise the search-and-replace functionality is powerful, fast, and seamless.
Every time I look beyond my regular use into the deeper recesses of the application, I am not disappointed. This is an amazing tour-de-force of a text editor!
clearly the best programmer's editor
Some of the unix CLI editors are outstanding, but BBEdit is clearly the Rolls Royce.
Not only is the product fantastic, but so is the support. I have found a handful of tiny bugs over the years, reported them, and seem them all rectified in no time.
With the ability to execute shell commands, there is no need for the terminal. BBEdit does it all!
