the old app was better

I like being able to @ people the overall aesthetic of the new design but it’s lacking a lot of functionality.

In the old design, I really liked how we could access the search bar and the Unread/Unread and Unmuted from anywhere on the screen instead of having to scroll all the way to the top to perform a search or filter messages in this app, losing our place in the messages. This is even more annoying cause you guys removed the back to top button.

Also, I really miss having the app/service pop up next to the notification number (under the timestamp of when the notif was received). I tend to prioritise which message I read first by looking at the service it was sent from. Also if you message the same person on multiple platforms it’s nice knowing which one it is.

Finally, I used to make the most of Favourites in the old app (around 14) because the icons were small, minimalistic and didn’t occupy much space at the top of the screen. Now favourited chats are HUGE—I’ve had to reduce it to five because I was lacking a ridiculous amount of visibility of my chats and STILL it occupies almost half of my screen. It’s quite annoying because I can’t see as many chats as once!

Overall, even though the aesthetic is a bit nicer, I keep finding myself reaching for the old app because of these reasons. Hopefully I’m not forced to switch over!

Still Needs Improvement

I used the old Beeper app, and found that functionality and usability wise, the old one was much more responsive. In this one, Instagram messages are delayed by 10-15 seconds both in receiving and sending. The old was almost instant. I keep getting hit with still sending messages. The UX is a little nicer but please fix the delay and duplicate message notifications.

Finally, the doomscrolling killer.

I’ve never written a review, but I’m done with social media. You return for your friend’s DMs, get trapped by a vortex of slight satisfying information that makes you feel that arresting an extra five minutes while make you informed, and then never leave. I can’t change my friend’s habits, but I can change mine. Now I don’t miss their communications, and I can uninstall social media apps to improve my mental space.
