I am a long time subscriber to Darkroom (maybe 3 years) and I have watched it mature into a powerhouse app. I shoot with a Canon R5 in Compressed Raw (CRaw) and it even handles those files due to the clever way it piggy backs of Apples iOS OS to do the heavy lifting. I am genuinely amazed at how quickly I can adjust images and give them the lift they need and then seamlessly integrate the changes into my Apple Photo Library and in a non-destructive way so the original file is always safe. Files open fast, tweaks are easy and saving simple.

I love Darkroom and it's a serious contender to Lightroom for me. It is just lacking in a couple of areas before I'd make the jump and purchase it, but otherwise, I love it and it's interface. I'll list some things that I personally think would make the app a total replacement to Lightroom: Denoise, warping, better recovery of shadows and overexposed highlights, a dehaze feature and better subject detection in masking. There's one thing that I find a little annoying, when I go to adjust a slider (across every device), I find that there is a slight lag (which feels like a jump) before it goes from zero to wherever you place the slider. It almost skips from 0-10, like it's trying to catch up. I need to overadjust before bringing it back if I want to make a small adjustment. I don't know if this is just my experience but I find that this slows me down a little. Maybe I'd get used to it, but it's not something that I love right now. Otherwise, I enjoy all the features in the app, it's awesome and very powerful. I especially love the presets sharing features and I can't wait for there to be even more of them from different users. I will be keeping my eye on this app and very likely buying it in the future as it appears to be improving all the time.
About the cost
basilimobile
Always enjoyed using Darkroom over other iOS photo processing apps and finally, finally masks have been added to the toolkit to make version 6 a complete app, but that one time price of USD75 — for those of us that don’t like renting our software — is pretty steep and what hurts more is that a purchase on the Australian App Store costs just under AUD120, whereas my currency converter tells me an equivalent price should be around AUD100.Edit: the developers reached out after I wrote the above review to tell me that Apple is the one that sets the foreign pricing based on the USD price of the app. Understood, bit doesn’t change the fact that the price in AUD costs way more than full featured pro-level desktop software like Serif’s Affinity Photo. Some people will see the value in Darkroom 6. I don’t.
Developer Response
Thank you for your feedback on pricing. Apple handles currency conversion and sets the price automatically based on our USD pricing.
Fixes
- Fixed rendering glitches caused by Clarity when exporting RAW photos from your Library or when using Batch Actions, so your exports are consistent and accurate.
- Fixed a thumbnail issue where RAW+JPG photos could appear overexposed or underexposed after edits, so previews match your edited photo.
