Old school JRPG with a simple charm
Dragon Quest is as traditional as you can get with it's simple animations, pixel sprite graphics and a straight forward turn-based battle mechanic.
It doesn't have a whole lot of complexity or strategy when monsters and villains are pitted against your courageous hero. However this same simplicity acts as both a reminder of how far we've come in terms of advancing the JRPG genre and also allows the game to easily transition into mobile gaming.

Cons
- Quite a bit of grinding is involved to afford new equipment and learn new abilities
- Frequency of random enemy encounters can be grating during long play sections
Final words
A very simple RPG mechanically, yet still very much enjoyable with it's colorful presentation, graceful music and charming revitalisation of an old classic.
Faithful update to a legendary classic
Not only did this game start an iconic series, but it also spawned a genre of games. The grand daddy of Final Fantasy, Star Ocean and Tales of series. The mechanics are quite dated, but if you appreciate old school charm this is the best way to appreciate a moment in gaming history.
Fans of the NES classic will find a more modern and consistent translation and some nice quality of life improvements such as a contextual action button and redesigned menus. Has a save anywhere feature in addition to the classic save system for on-the-go grinding when you have some free moments.
A Masterpiece
A simply incredible game. As playable today as it was back then. Perfect for a 10 hour commute. A masterpiece!
