Updated review: Evernote seems to be getting back on it’s game with better speed and stability. New features being added now seem useful rather than glittery.Still up there as my choice for keeping notes however it’s not yet back to the five stars it used to be.Updated review: The latest versions and updates have felt clunky and performed at a fairly mediocre level. The updates have been improving version 8 however not enough. My biggest gripe is the lack of reliability and predictability. When I open the app I don't know it it's going to behave and I don't know if I'll be able to use it to the full extent of my expectations. Evernote is still my choice but for the first time since swapping to it many years ago I have started to investigate what other options are out there. Previous review: After a year of slipping from great to good (imo), Evernote is back with greater stability, a better extension and snappier operation. Very happy to see one of my most used apps in the lead again.

I’ve had and used Evernote for years at this point, because I found it to be a good note-keeping app. I’ve even upgraded to premium a few times. I did not like the change to the whole subscription-based model, but that’s fine. What’s not fine is how the app has somehow gotten worse since. I only have evernote on my iphone and my ipad, with most use on the phone and very infrequent on the ipad. Cross-device syncing isn’t the issue. But every now and again the app makes multiple MULTIPLE copies when I make a new note, because of syncing problems? I tolerated that, because whatever, I can just delete the half a dozen extra copies. What has genuinely p*ssed me off now is I had typed out a note the previous night and today it’s gone. I didn’t delete it, it’s not in the trash folder, and I even saw it as a thumbnail on the main page under ‘recent notes’ until it just. Disappeared. It wasn’t a short note, it was a draft for something I’m working on and now it’s gone into the ether because ???? How are you going to pester people to pay subscription for your note app yet decrease in quality like this while you do. Yeah, no, I’m not happy.

Catching Butterflies

My creativity is at its zenith when I’m out walking in Nature - verses of poems, lines or just titles come flitting by like butterflies and unless I can catch them they fly off, a fond but ephemeral memory that I cannot recall word for word. They drift away as a swarm of butterflies on the breeze. Evernote enables my Endangered Wildlife Poetry because if I can’t find a place to sit down and commit the inspiration to digital words on my iPad, I can record the thoughts in real time on my phone - knowing they will be saved and safe in Evernote. I do all my composing in Evernote so that I don’t lose anything, and can search for specific poems by words, phrases in the text I remember, or title. When the time comes to publish I simply cut and paste. It helps that the logo is an Elephant - and I’ve written many poems about Elephants - and that it can do my memorising! It is my essential creativity tool, my butterfly net.
Love/Hate

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Evernote over the years. I’ve been using it since 2012 and features have been added and taken away for all kinds of reasons unknown. I really hope that under this new Management it will improve and be more reliable, especially now that they are increasing the subscription fee (because the new features they’re toting to justify the increase in my opinion are overhyped). I really like the implementation of Tasks. However I feel it’s missing advanced ordering features Eg. I have multiple notes that have tasks within each one but there is no way to create a custom order of those notes (without having to manually rename notes within a notebook). I wish I could just literally tap, hold and drop notes into a custom order within a notebook. I currently do not use tasks within Evernote at the moment because of this. I’m currently using Apple reminders instead because of its advanced filtering and reorder options.
New features:
- Add captions to your images to make them searchable. Evernote will suggest a caption for you, and you can edit it anytime.
- Date mentions are now available. Type @ to insert dates using natural language like "tomorrow", "next Friday", or "1st January". Supports relative dates, and you can customise the display format.
- Videos are now transcribed like audio with speaker recognition.
- Hand a live transcription to the AI Assistant to get a summary or ask additional questions.
