Ratings and Reviews
Highly immersive and intricate
The first time I played this was on normal difficulty and made it quite far into the story but died in the end, due to a bad dice roll. The second time lasting only a few pages due to different choices and drunkenness. The third, to a totally different ending.
This game keeps on giving, is highly entertaining and while the battles may be considered difficult by some, I consider them a well-balanced feature that adds an element of realism to a choose your own adventure.
The price is well worth the experience.
Difficult but worth it. A very very refreshing experience which introduces you into an engaging new world.
This is the first in a series of gamebooks written by Tin Man Games. If you have read any Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, Grail Quest, or similar type of gamebooks, this is an excellent addition to the genre. The production values are excellent, and the writing solid. In comparison to the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks which are being re-released for the iPhone, this series is far more plot-driven, and hence much more satisfying, particularly if you are returning to the genre as an adult (this is not to detract from the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks which remain classics in their own right, and worth a look too). The in-game mechanics are well handled by the dice-rolling engine, which takes advantage of the accelerometer in the iPhone. I've seen one criticism levelled at this series, which is, "Why don't you create this as a game with graphics, so I don't have to read lots of text?" My response to this is that with these books, it's all about your imagination, and the pictures in your mind's eye. The world is well described and well-realised, and the atmosphere evocative. Slightly pricier than some comparative gamebooks, this is an original work, rather than digitisation of an existing work, and so I would imagine production costs are higher. Highly recommended.
