Rock Paper Scissors?
Hearthstone is a good game. Well balanced and if you put in the time (and money) easy to climb to the top 5-10 ranks if you understand the meta decks and the gameplay at its core. Here is where my problem comes in. Once it gets to the top 5 ranks, the game literally degenerates into a larger version of rock, paper, scissors, wherein it’s a matter of luck whether you are matched up against a favourable opponent. For example, back when I played a metric tonne the only decks really used were Control Warlock, Murloc Paladin and some other decks I’ve forgotten. Basically if you play warlock, you pray for “not Paladin” because when you inevitably are matched up against Paladin, it all comes down to the luck of the draw and not so much skill. It becomes really frustrating to top deck useless card after useless card, while your opponent has a board of 1/1s that become 3/3s when he drops a top decked Sunkeeper, the list goes on. Further, at the top ranks, my win rate was usually around 55%, meaning I could spend hours playing the game nonstop and climb all of 3-4 stars. Ultimately, became very frustrating and I felt like it was just a waste of time, because I wasn’t really improving at the game, merely hoping.
Well made, luck driven game.
This game has proven to be one of my most played games. Both on computer and on iPhone. The game is fun and exciting, however since this is a card game, there is going some aspects of luck and on my case I had it bad :P
But despite this, the game is actually well made with good animations and actions. Sometimes the meta can be broken and you can continuously see a lack of imagination in deck creation in that people are forced to either play the same Meta decks as everyone or try something fun and lose your ability to win.
In hearthstone they had also include ingame single payer allowing for break from your usual decks and test your skill against ai and special bosses in adventures. Its good for new players because blizzard has introduced adventures that give you a deck and offers cards to enhance it. To fight against unpredictable bosses and decks.
Therefore, if you don’t mind losing every now and again, whether it be your luck or the meta, this game is fun and well made. So I’d suggest giving it ago and testing it yourself. It is tough on new players so don’t be too disheartened by losing frequently at first. And before downloading be wary of this apps size, it takes a lot of space :P
Solo adventures AI problems
I love the game as it was easy to pick up and play. However, the solo adventure mode isn’t fair nor fun to play if you constantly lose because of RNG. Most loses were due to all RNG favourable to the AI. The AI at higher rounds also knows what card they’ll draw and knows how to plan ahead, while the player has no control of planning ahead as the cards are random making it troublesome at the extent of having no fun. I want this game to have fun, but the solo mode isn’t. The only way to make solo AI matches fair are to have the same random choices as the players do. Having a match at low games that the player doesn’t have good/decent cards to slow tilt in the players win rate. Currently I have beaten 67 campions in the new Rastakhan Rumble Solo Adventure and haven’t won once. This isn’t fair and nor should the AI you verse against.
