“Hopscotch is the best way to express your imagination! Most other "learn to code" apps just make you complete boring levels with 4 "move" blocks, but in hopscotch you have the freedom to create anything, which is amazing.” — BuildASnowman, Hopscotcher

“This taught me sooooo much about basics of coding. I have been able to make some cool games I hope to learn more as I advance this app was extremely helpful and easy to learn.” — BestBeginnersCoding, Hopcotcher

“I had ZERO background or programming experience. I personally checked all 8 or 10 of these blogs about recommendations. And Hopscotch was the most intuitive and interactive. It’s not like you’re just playing video games. My daughter loves it!” — Mom, S. to daughter, 8

“I am a 4th grade teacher who LOVES your app. Our students have been introduced to coding through it and I am impressed with the creativity they have shown and the skills they are building while creating projects.” — Kelley, 4th grade teacher

What’s New

Version 3.34.0

Earlier this year we released the width and height blocks, and you went nuts making incredible 3D simulations. With this release, your 3D projects will be better than ever. Read on to find out why:

New Features
- Never have your old project break again. The hopscotch player is versioned so you can be sure that your game will be pegged to the stable release you made it on.
- Your two-player games are getting an upgrade. Super-smooth multitouch brought to you by Nazari, Hopscotch's newest developer.
- The community is safer and more fun than ever. You can browse amazing projects made by hopscotchers in sixteen new curated channels.
- After seeing a lot of you try to edit your project and instead of pressing home and exiting it instead, we rearranged the buttons, so they live where you expect them. You're welcome!
- That handy about page we always ask you for when you write to us, is now a tiny bit easier to find.

Bug Fixes
- Now you can always switch accounts to use the account you subscribed from on iTunes.
- The shapes are more shapely and no longer have padding around them. This will make set width and height waaay easier to use. As a bonus, we also added a couple of new shapes.
- When you used the "set text" block, your objects would no longer resize correctly. Fixed!

As always, shoot us an email at with any questions/comments/suggestions. You might show up in the next release notes!

Editors' Notes

“Coding” may sound a bit dry and daunting to some newcomers, but those are the last things that come to mind while using Hopscotch. The app lets you have as much fun making games as playing them, and with its colourful, friendly interface and stacks of help and tutorials, kids (and grown-ups!) can build all kinds of apps—while learning the fundamentals of programming. Best of all, you can share your creations so anyone with an iPhone or iPad can play them too!

This app is great for rapid prototyping, creating games to share with friends, playing awesome inspiring games made by kids, and even for making art.
It's basically Scratch for phones and on the go. It really outshines other apps in terms of efficiency, safety, and app cleanliness!

I want to really share some problems I have though, which is the reason why I won't give a 5-star rating.

-First of all, this app has lost a lot of it's community over the years. Many have left over stuff like the new subscription, which is right in your face the second you open the app, and removed one of the very best things about Hopscotch on impact; the fact that it was free to use.

-Also talking about the subscription, it's quite lackluster and is absolutely NOT worth the price. I personally would rather that all of the tutorials are in the app for free, because there's not anything to get out of them professionally.

I have some things that would make my rating go up.

-Allow more space for projects.
-Make tutorials free.
-Introduce powerful cloud-based features for subscribers.
-Introduce powerful math and programming features such as lists, booleans, and advanced math.
-Increase the interest in kids by matching all of Scratch's features now that Scratch is on tablets.

Developer Response ,

Hey, thanks for your such valuable feedback. We have so many great plans for how we want to take Hopscotch forward, with amazing features which will allow you kids to make even more awesome games than ever before. However, all of this costs money, which is tough as we always want Hopscotch to be available and fun for everyone, even those people who aren’t able to subscribe. We’ve tried only to have features that are “nice to have” requiring a subscription, leaving the ones that are essential as being free. Please get in touch on with your ideas as the more our users share their ideas, the better for everyone! Ana

Concerned Parent

I am deeply concerned that children are using this app to communicate with each other in what is basically a social media/messaging capacity. I keep reading how safe this app is for children and how it is monitored and yet my 11 year old has been able to communicate with god knows who, sharing personal information. On top of that she has been encouraged about things regarding sexuality, gender and self harm. I am horrified at what she has been exposed to by an app that is considered so safe. I suggest you seriously reassess the ability for children (if some of them are even children) to essentially just chat with each other through remixing projects. I have removed this app from my children’s devices and informed their school (who told me to download it in the first place) that this is a serious issue and that they should remove it from their technology program. I will also be telling every parent I know about the dangers this app poses.

Developer Response ,

First off, I am so sorry that your 11yo had a negative experience. Safety is something we take very seriously here, and having teachers and parents as founders means we care deeply about the content that is expressed in the app. The primary way kids use Hopscotch is as it was intended: as a tool for coding their own games, which they then sometimes publish into the community. Every piece of text is filtered, and every image used within a game is approved by a human. There is no commenting or messaging ability in the app, although publishers do get notifications if someone remixes their project. We also have checks on general game themes and a rigorous flagging system for games that fail the moderation checks. Users who repeatedly fail moderation checks are removed from the system. However, a minority of users determined to get around these sometimes find new ways to do so, and it seems like your daughter became involved. We are always trying to improve our system and would appreciate learning more details and specifics about the offensive projects you saw. Please reach out to me directly at with more information about your daughter's account. We would value the opportunity to learn more about what happened here. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and in advance for your help.
