Sensibo 4+

As a whole, Sensibo works well for me. Unlike others, I’ve not had issues getting a decent connection with my hardware to my aircon. The app itself works well and has gone through a few major UI tweaks. For the most part, it’s responsive. I have some reservations about the UX flow and some confusing UI choices. But nothing that can’t be solved with a bit of extra digging into the menus.

What I simply abhor is Sensibo locking scheduling features behind a pay wall. For some “AI” features I can sort of understand their decision to paywall it, but others like scheduled climate react? Or even just climate reacts “sync with AC power” requires you to shell out some coin. It’s just a slap in the face after already spending hundreds of dollars on multiple Sensibo sensors to have some features locked behind further subscriptions.

So, be warned well ahead, if you want to buy this product just be aware you will be missing out on some of the more advanced scheduling features behind further fees. It feels really predatory and dishonest to be blunt, and makes recommending Sensibo difficult.

The Sensibo Plus paid subscription offers advanced AI analytics which optimize energy efficiency. The Sensibo Plus plan is an addition to the existing features. However, the schedule is a basic feature and free. You can easily schedule events in advance for the following:

- Turning the A/C On or Off
- Change Temperature
- Change Heat to Cool
- Change the fan mode - Auto, Low, Medium, High
- Repeat the schedule

Once you have it up and running it works as advertised. Pleasingly it is very sensitive to remote control detection wherever you have it in the room, even not directly in front of AC unit.

BUT… the out of box setup experience is simply awful. The offer to send you a ‘’magic link’ to login instead of a password just doesn’t work (it opens in safari not in the Sensibo App). Then you try to set a normal password and it won’t let you (presumably because you’d tried setting up with the password less magic link). So had to start again with another email as I couldn’t fix the first one. Set this up as a normal password login, however this was painful too as it took multiple goes to get it to set/reset password. App is also not integrated with iOS password manager for remembering the login details.

I like the device and it's working well most of the time. Setup is a real pain and will make you pull your hair out and once it's set up it will occasionally drop wifi connection for no apparent reason but it's mostly ok. What leaves a bad taste in the mouth is that they are charging a subscription fee for features that don't seem to incur any real additional costs for them and keep spamming you with upsell messages that you can't switch off. I understand charging for features that require cloud storage, like keeping logs for longer etc. but charging to turn on geofenced climate react when geofencing itself is possible without a charge? That just feels like putting popular features behind a paywall to squeeze customers' wallets more. If the device itself was free I could understand it, but I already paid $300 for 2 units! That's the price of a portable A/C. Asking me to fork out another $40 per year for features that should already be included and calling that "most popular" is just obscene. Robotic "sorry you feel that way" style developer responses aren't helpful either.
