Hey there! Want to learn Japanese? MARU Japanese Kana, used by over 1 million learners around the world, is just the right tool for you. It's a small but mighty app I created to make Japanese alphabets less scary and more fun! I did such an awesome job that I wish MARU was around when I started learning Japanese. Seems like I'm not the only one, looking at all the fantastic reviews!

Jump right in and get the real Japanese vibe from a professional voice actress in a ton of exercises. There are 14 different fun practices that make learning Hiragana and Katakana as easy as pie. Reading, writing, listening, typing, and even boosting your vocab - it's all here. A perfect start to your Japanese adventure!
About those ads: only a teeny-tiny bit. You'll see an ad only after five mistakes. Since MARU was born in 2017, it's been downloaded over a million times, but I've hardly made any money with ads. No sweat, though! This is all about spreading the joy of learning Japanese!

What's inside:
• 105 Hiragana and Katakana characters, even the fancy sounds and combos.
• Over 300 everyday words (like ""hello"" and ""thank you"") for practice.
• Super clear voice recordings for all words and characters.
• MARU-kun, our adorable mascot, welcomes you every time you practice.
• A clever feature that spots your struggles and helps manage your progress.
• A fun way to practice Katakana with Hiragana words you already know.

It's totally free, but if you want to upgrade, here's what you get:
• A peaceful, ad-free experience.
• Practice offline, anytime, anywhere.
• Try your hand at writing and typing.
• Test yourself with timed exercises.
• Unlock even more words for time, date, and Katakana.

Here's one of my favorite reviews:
"This is MY #1 app for learning Japanese. I downloaded EVERY Japanese app I could find without paying a single dime. The app does exactly what it promises - nice graphics, great voice acting, and awesome practice methods. I'm in love with this awesome app!" - someone who's also very awesome

Wow! I can't believe you finished reading all this. You must be very interested by now. Just download and start learning already!

やっほー!May 2024 be the year to become so so good at Japanese! Your favorite Hiragana learning app just got even better (•u•):
• iPad Optimization: Hi my 12% iPad users, I finally spent some time to enlarge the font sizes for some areas in iPad. I also adjusted MARU's face a bit. Bye bye Fat MARU, hello Big MARU!
• Sound Optimization: Based on your feedback, I increased the volume of all the pronunciation files. Hopefully that makes them clearer!
• Detail View Optimization: I enlarged the Kana in the detail screen and added a cool scroll effect to make it prettier.
• Hide Romaji: Tap top right toggle again to hide romaji to review Kanas
• Dark Mode Fix: Fixed bug where sometimes borders disappear in practices when you first purchase Pro and switch to Dark Mode.

Great!

I was looking for some Japanese apps to help me learn, and this has by far been the most helpful one that I’ve come across, it’s definitely amazing! It mixes up the different hiragana that your learning to keep your memory fresh instead of routined. I’ve just completed my Hiragana and I don’t think I could have done it as quickly as with this app. There has been no issues, glitches or bugs! It’s great!

Great at first, disappointing soon after.

So initially I was quite excited about this app. It’s simple, the way you learn characters works for my brain and I absolutely love how making 5 (I think) mistakes ends up in watching an ad as a punishment (in stead of seeing them all the time). Then I started writing down everything I learned on paper and noticed there were a few significant gaps in my newly found knowledge. Not because I hadn’t memorised them but because they’re simply not taught. All the hiragana g, z, d, b and p syllables are not in here! I haven’t even gotten to katakana yet but I can only image it’s the same. My excitement was quickly replaced with disappointment. This app has so much potential because it works so well but if only 60% is taught, why bother? I hope I’m wrong and I hope if missed something but there isn’t much to choose or change in settings that I think that this is actually just it.

Great Update

This app is great and has been a huge help with my learning. One thing that’s be a huge help is when constructing a word if it’s wrong you don’t get to see the correct answer before moving on. Just an idea.

Please keep up the great work. It’s a shame you don’t have a kanji section or app as I think your app style would make it easier to learn than other apps.

Developer Response ,

Thank for your super nice feedback! Would love to learn more about your suggestion regarding "One thing that’s be a huge help is when constructing a word if it’s wrong you don’t get to see the correct answer before moving on." Feel free to email me in-app more with more details about it. Kanji - I'm currently writing a sister app that has Kanji practices. Hopefully I can push it out before you master everything :P
