Description

The evidence from reading research is clear: letter-sound knowledge is crucial in learning to read and spell. However, learning the links between letter patterns and speech sounds is not easy! LetterSounds™ 2 Pro provides a unique, fun and highly engaging way for students of all ages to learn the relationships between groups of letters and speech sounds for reading and spelling!

The app uses a patent pending, highly effective, multisensory teaching method which is being described by educators as a breakthrough in teaching students to read. This method makes it easy to teach students to rapidly, automatically and accurately recognise the most common letter-sound patterns in English.

LetterSounds™ 2 Pro was developed by Dr. Bartek Rajkowski, PhD, a speech-language pathologist specialising in reading development. The program is based on research into the underlying mechanisms of reading acquisition and thousands of hours of clinical experience in teaching students how to read.

PLEASE NOTE:
- Requires iPad 2 or higher
- This app is Australian! US and UK accent options will be added in the next update!
- Although students love using it, LetterSounds™ 2 Pro is not just a game - it is a powerful and fully customisable teaching tool. Please take some time to experiment with it yourself before trying it with students!

Why is learning the links between speech sounds and the letter patterns that typically represent them so important?

The past several decades of research have provided conclusive evidence that competent readers are skilled in using letter-sound knowledge to work out (decode) unfamiliar words when reading. Difficulty in understanding that words are made up of sounds (a skill called phonemic awareness) and just how speech sounds are represented by letters are hallmarks of the struggling reader. Furthermore, teaching methods that begin by teaching students letter-sound relationships (synthetic phonics methods) are known to be superior to other approaches in teaching reading, regardless of whether students do or do not have reading difficulties.

Understanding that letters typically represent certain speech sounds poses a challenge to students learning to read since there is no meaningful relationship between the way that letters and letter patterns look and the speech sounds they typically represent. For example, there is no reason why the letter pattern “igh” represents the speech sound in the middle of the word “night”.

LetterSounds™ 2 Pro makes learning (and teaching) these relationships easy through its unique game-based teaching method!

I've waited years for a tool like this

Yay! Now we've got a brilliant tool that moves beyond the single letter sounds, has Australian pronunciation, and is based on solid research.
It's always surprised me the total void of quality tools available for developing such a fundamental skill - the sound of digraphs and word endings - ch, sh, ou, tion....
No school should be without it. It's instructional, differentiates for learners, and it's fun!
I demonstrated this app (as part of some regional iPad training) for a group of SSOs just this week; they were blown away with the range of sounds and presets, scope for customisation, strength in differentiation provided by withdrawing and replacing mnemonic support according to the child's responses, and it's game based nature. Before leaving the training they had already secured agreement from their site leader for the purchase of all apps from this developer.
I'm using this app with children who are struggling readers aged 7-12 years. I work with individual students and with groups with one-to-one iPads. I'm yet to find a student who doesn't love it, find it engaging, work hard towards being successful and achieve success.
Btw, with a small amount of guidance they quickly (even the 7-yos) develop independence in navigating and setting up activities customised to their areas of need. (jotting errors on a scrap of paper helps with future customisation)

Amazing App

Wow!! As a mum of a 9yo boy who experiences learning difficulties with his working memory & processing skills and has recently been diagnosed with APD this app is nothing short of Amazing!!!
He uses the Letter Sounds 2 & Word Builder everyday for his homework spelling words, revising common & less common graphemes and recently he was shown how he could use it whilst reading to me and if he comes across a difficult word he can enter it into the word builder and sounds it out. I can not tell you how much joy and confidence this brings him as he is able to read more fluently.
In his words "it's amazing! and I really like how I get to beat my highest score also it's really helped me get better at my spelling tests I got 24/25 & 22/25".
Thank you so much you have made our homework time more enjoyable :)

Top app for parents to support kids at home

This app is just fantastic. It is in game form but is really a therapeutic tool given it was created by an expert Speech Pathologist who treats reading difficulties. It clearly shows the parent and child which sounds are not being heard and goes on to give practice to develop the weakness. Level of difficulty can be adjusted and it is customisable. Great at home or in school.
