Overall very happy

We have been using Lightspeed restaurant for about six weeks and am overall happy with the system.

For many reasons I wanted an iPad based pos system. I looked at several and ended up going with Lightspeed, although I was apprehensive because it was so new and it was hard to find reviews or see it action, especially in Australia. The free trial period was great and allowed me to experiment a see if it was suitable without spending any money.

We are a busy Melbourne cafe, 80 seats and full on weekends plus a lot of take-away coffees. We have a kitchen and a coffee/drinks area.

I bought three Star thermal printers, one iPad and two iPad minis. Drinks print to the coffee area and food to the kitchen.

Orders are sometimes taken simultaneously. Lightspeed is flawless in keeping up with service - it is very fast and the second you hit send it prints. Zero lag. This was my biggest concern so I'm very happy about that. This might be because I have a very good WIFI set-up. Two airport extremes give full coverage everywhere.

The back-end is fairly intuitive to set up menu items, modifiers, tables, etc. You can do it on a desktop browser or directly on the iPad. We managed to get it to do everything we wanted. We change specials every few days and the staff can update that themselves. The reports are pretty good but I would like some more customisation with combining categories and calculating wage percentages. The log - log off for staff was bit glitchy but I found a work-around.

The iPad interface is very good. It's well set out and you can move tables and change orders easily. Paying is great- split bills, etc. The photos feature is novel and we have used it a bit for upselling.

The create or move a table feature is awesome and makes great use of touch on the iPad.

Lightspeed support was very good. I had lots of questions early on and all were answered by email within a day. I think support is in the US and Belgium so there is a time difference. Phone support was excellent- they assigned one guy to me so he always knew what my history was.

I ended up getting a Lightspeed server ($400) for piece of mind if the Internet went down. They initially sent me one configured for Europe but with one phone call they fixed it remotely to sync with Australian servers.

The pricing is very competitive. No upfront fees means I can change systems anytime without sunk costs. The hardware is compatible with other iPad systems.

There have been a few updates since we installed the system. This is a good sign more feature will be added and bugs ironed out.

Not the best

Currently entering the code to open the app in a busy restaurant. But keeps returning to the ‘enter code’ page so app won’t open 😡

Rubbish

Totally rubbish, it is useless. It is not an ordering system app.mess complicated to be used. I will uninstall this after wrote this review.
