  • A new way of thinking about food

I highly recommend Noom. I’m 10 years post accident/multiple foot surgeries & lack of exercise & boredom l gradually gained a lot of weight. I’ve yo-yo’d trying to loose it myself & always put it back on. Noom’s approach, has completely changed how l look at food & my lifestyle (& I’m a chef) yes there’s food logging/calorie counting, but in doing that I’ve changed my eating & cooking habits, I’m enjoying much healthier cuisine. It doesn’t restrict any food just the quantities you consume each day of different types. But more so it’s not just about food it’s everything in life that makes you healthy & fit. And because you have a coach & group to communicate with, they boost you to improve in all aspects of your life. I have now started a non weight bearing workout, which I’m actually wanting to do 3 times a week - in 5 weeks (over lockdown in Melb) I’ve lost 4.5kg with them. And changed my thoughts to food so much that it’s carried over to work & I’m incorporating much healthier & still delicious menus for everyone l cook for. Without doubt Noom has changed my approach to life & my overall happiness, even though still injured l can change the health of the rest of my body.

  • Logging now reinstated

EDIT: I have added two more stars and changed the title of this review because Noom have now reinstated the ability to log weight (and other things) in the free version of the app. Past logs are also again available - so thank you Noom for doing the right thing by past (and potential future) subscribers.I subscribed to Noom a couple of years ago, and it was initially helpful. I managed to lose 5kg of the 10kg I wanted to lose, but then it was simply impossible for me to eat any less or exercise any more, so that was as good as it got. I didn’t continue my subscription, but was allowed to retain access to simple things like logging my weight and logging activity and food if I wished. I just logged my weight, almost every day for the past two and a half years. Today I opened the app to find everything gone, with no warning, and no ability to log my weight in the free version. Noom will now only draw your weight from other apps. So, why use Noom at all and give it access to all the information it wants about you? Its psychological approach to weight loss is a game changer to begin with, but once you apply it there’s really nothing more to learn. I guess that’s why they’ve had to make a basic feature like keeping a weight log a subscription only feature (despite telling former subscribers it was theirs to keep). Beware of trusting this company.

As a general weight-loss program it has helped to some extent. But my experiences with customer support were absolutely appalling. Despite them giving very detailed (but inaccurate/inappropriate) replies in the chat function, the customer service provider timed out really really quickly and was removed from the chat before I even had time to screenshot the replies, let alone read them. Accidentally leaving the chat was really easy to do, and archives/transcripts of the chat conversations were not automatically recorded. When I complained about this, the instructions I was given to request a transcript asked me to select options that weren’t available. I also found the quizzes really intolerable. Given that emotions and distorted thinking play a huge role in our eating habits, I found it really confronting to be asked questions about those distorted thoughts, and then be marked right or wrong. I understand that the purpose was to teach us facts to challenge thought distortions, but the way it’s done here did nothing to change my mind/alter my thinking, and just made me loose a lot of respect for the program. I’m not ever going to be engaged by a program that rewards me for providing answers that I don’t believe in, nor is that strategy going to be an effective tool for creating long-lasting cognitive change. Noom markets itself as being psychology-informed, so this is a massive disappointment.

I highly recommend this app and program to anyone feeling frustrated about an inability to lose weight and to keep it off. There is no secret ingredient or weird eating regime. This program is written and facilitated by psychologists who specialise in coaching people in a healthy lifestyle and assisting them to reach their weight loss goals. The best part is not having to give up foods that are treats, rather eating them only occasionally and learning to use them as rewards. Your program is tailored to individual situations and goals. You have a personal coach who is available for any queries or to guide you through challenges. Most importantly, participants learn why it is they overeat, learn about their relationship with food and how to change poor habits. Then once you reach your weight loss goal, you learn how to maintain your new weight. I have lost 10kg in three months and am very happy. I feel healthy, have more energy, and am confident that my new svelte me will stay this way! The cost of the program was a fabulous investment. I now continue to use the free version of the app to maintain my weight. Thank you Noom ...and good luck to those people who are willing to give it a try!

  • Excellent!

I needed something to help me focus on losing the 6-8kg I had put on post injuries last year and which I had not been able to budge on my own. I decided to sign up to Noom during Coronavirus lockdown in Melbourne Australia so that I would hopefully achieve something for me during this very isolating time. I joined thinking that even if I couldn’t stick with it then hopefully, at the very least, I would come out of lockdown no heavier than I went in. Many people are putting on weight at this time due to comfort eating & our reduced outdoor exercise time restrictions. I have found the focus & weight loss empowering & have recommended Noom to many people - it really does help to change your perspective about the food you choose daily, gives extra calorie allowance for any additional exercise you do and if you need it, makes allowances for a little blowout every so often then a reset afterwards. Having a coach & group to share experiences with is really supportive. I have lost 6kg& aim to lose another 1kg (maybe 2). Noom has been such a welcome focus for me during lockdown & I am feeling so much lighter & more agile - I hope others can feel this way too. Thank you Noom!

  • Really disappointed-

I first signed up to noom about 2 years ago and couldn’t continue because of the cost. Now I’m back, but it looks like noom haven’t made any product updates in that time!During the sign up process, I signed up for the extra meal and exercise plans. Both were delivered as static pdfs and nothing appeared in the app interface (no meal planner, no extra recipes, no extra content) to reflect my purchase. Everything is manual. Nothing synchs with Fitbit apart from steps. Exercise? Enter it manually. Meals? The database doesn’t recognise the majority of barcodes I scanned meaning having to manually enter them. MyFitnessPal has those food items in their database but as I said, nothing synchs to noom so manually entering it is!For a subscription based service I expect more automation. Looking at the last 5 months (that’s as far as it will go back) version history of the app, there have been no major updates or feature releases and only bug fixes. It looks like this is a zombie app making someone somewhere a passive income. If you have lots of time on your hands and love manually entering everything, then this is the app for you. If you want a tech supported weight loss journey that works with and enhances your existing tech, then this isn’t for you.
