Step 3: Make It Pretty
Look, if you're someone who is looking to get into using a spreadsheet to manage aspects of your personal/business life, I recommend giving Numbers a go. Most people will by default tell you to "use Excel because it has more functions" without actually giving it a go. The thing is yes Excel has more functions but how many people actually use them? All the general functions are there so unless you need the extra advanced ones it's great. Something that Numbers has that no other spreadsheeting software has is how much personalisation you have in terms of how it looks. I agrue that is DOES matter what your spreadsheet looks like, otherwise app developers would just have plain text on the screen, which is not the case, looks matter. I have been able to build spreadsheets that look like apps and it makes them way more engaging and visual. The tools and layout of the program don't take long to get use to. Give it a go!
I have my list of things I wish it had, but for the most part I can figure it out and when I do it's a wow moment. I just wish there was more learning resources (Devs if you see this let me make some!).
does almost everything you could ask for
I switched from PC to Mac in 2009 and for the first few years I continued to download pirated versions of word and excel. Then when Apple made numbers and pages free, I figured I'd give it a go. For the first couple of years it was quite lacking in functionality compared to excel. These days though, it does everything I need to do including complex formulas and formatting. The only thing I wish it did was handle headers and footers the same as excel so I could have an A4 size image in the header that becomes the background for invoice templates etc.
Happy to say that it is good enough that I treat people who send me .docx files with the same contempt as people with green messages.
Two Numbers features that would really help
I really like Numbers on MacOS but find there two features lacking that are really needed.
1. Putting the Sheet Names across the top was a very bad decision (it wasn't always so). I often have Numbers files with up to 30 or more Sheets in them and having to scroll back and forth on the Sheet selection bar tab is a pain. I can only get about 10 Sheet tabs on my 27" iMac (at a resolution I can see). If they were vertical I could probably have 30 or more tabs visible down the side (with longer descriptions if needed) making navigation much easier.
2. Not being able to access data in another Numbers file is a drawback. I have many numbers files that require the same data (stock prices, stock descriptions etc.) and if these could be all put in one file and made accessible to all other files that would be extremely useful.
