The magazine is great, no problem there. The applicaiton looks great and they have put a lot of energy into it, so Kudos. But unlike other apple devices and apps, this one it totally over engineered. Navigation around the magazine is totally confusing and it is near impossible to understand exactly where you are in your "read". The feling is that there is deep content in some areas and not in outher. You always find yourself flicking and tapping trying to find out if you have found all the hidden pages. The motion of the page movement is not smooth, and at times it is near impossible to read a section or see the full width of an image without changing the orientation of the app. It is so bad, I will not be buying another magazine on the device while the app remains this bad.iCandy value 10.Function 0

For a digital magazine it's a pretty lame effort. It's essentially the paper edition except you can scroll through it and store it digitally. Sometimes there are videos and interactive objects but the text isn't even dynamic or selectable, it's just an image you scroll through! Newsstand support is just about non existent except for the app being in the newsstand folder. What about automatic downloads that are ready in the morning? One of the biggest problems is the large downloads. If it was done in the background it would happen more often, now I find myself putting off reading new issues because of the effort of leaving the app open while it downloads. When I want to read popsci I don't want to wait 15min first, I want to read it now or I won't bother!However, for less than $3 an issue, it's still worth the purchase for the great content, if not delivered in the best possible way.

The app is pretty nice, and I appreciate the effort they've gone through to come up with an innovative interface. It works pretty well, but I think it could do with some fine tuning to get it just right. For one thing, it sometimes feels a bit sluggish when moving between pages/articles (content can take a while to appear). This is surprising, considering that all the content is pre-downloaded and not streaming off the 'net.I find the price per issue to be a little steep at $3.99. This makes it quite a bit more expensive than printed copies mailed to me on a subscription basis. I don't feel the extra cost is warranted, at least not based on what I've seen so far. If the app's experience was significantly better and more engaging than the printed copy's, then the price be easier to swallow (though $3.99 would still seem quite high).

When iOS 5 came out and newsstand was included I was skeptical about how useful this feature would be, until I downloaded the Popular Science Mag. That was when I really started to enjoy and see the potential of newsstand. I have recently (December 2011) subscribed for 12 months and have just downloaded my second issue (February 2012) and am absolutely loving it. My mum is a science teacher and has just recently brought the iPad into her school, and Popular science will be an app that she will use often in classes. I would recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in technology and science. I plan to re-subscribe after my current subscription runs out.
