  • Incredible App 🤩 Best 3D interface and toolset that I’ve seen or used.

    me.mark

Just started using this App. It’s running at a perfectly decent speed on my 10 year old iPad. The fact that it has tutorials that actually match and represent what’s on screen and produce the exact output shown on the video (if you follow the steps) is mind boggling in itself (compared to many other tutorials I’ve seen). The 3D object building control features in even the basic tutorial, show how powerful, yet accessible this app is… again, compared to the many 3D packages I’ve seen over many years. Just works! The combination of hand movement, and pen details is super nice and again working with my original Pen 1.0 device… I’m only able to use iOS 16 on this old iPad and it’s all working fine. I could imagine some heavily complex objects/scenes could get slow, but I’m just working through some simple designs, so it seems fine for my use.

  • Great app, but with some frustrations

    NADEAU WATCHES

I’ve been using Shapr3D for several years now and have been a big advocate of its usability, particularly the way this tool can bridge the gap from a novice to a very experienced CAD designer and intuitively allow each to grow and Improve. However many of the frustrations that were excusable years ago are becoming less acceptable as the subscription cost a has climbed.A great example is the lack of any way to sort, classify, organise or search for your designs within the app. As someone with many hundreds of designs within Shapr3D I often find myself spending frustrating amounts of time searching through a massive list of designs trying to find what I’m after. It may seem like a small problem but the app has several of these small oversights that begin to add up. Despite promises for almost 4 years on the Shapr3D support forum that simple features like the ability to create a folder are on the way, the developers seem to continually overlook these basic features.I’m therefore a little torn on my opinion of Shapr3D. It really does has a lot to offer, but after a while you may (like me) begin to ask yourself that if they can’t seem to implement some of the basics - is it going to be the tool for you into the long term.

  • Very buggy on iPad Pro M4

    Mr Amazing Trousers

Apple needs to step in, IOS desperately needs an app like this that is competitive with solid works and fusion. This is unfinished software that is crazy over priced and regularly freezes on my M4 iPad Pro. The more I use it the more bugs I encounter. Some tools regularly fail to work, Use of Apple Pencil is not refined enough, regularly selects the wrong item on complex items particularly when only hovering and not touching with iPad Pro. Sketch lines will often refuse to join so that you can’t create a shape that will extrude. Sketch dimensions are sometimes changed when body is extruded or lines are trimmed, measure tool is clunky and won’t measure certain items e.g. centre of circles. Sometimes crashes when editing bodies, splines, construction planes etc. Desperately needs a full history and better descriptions when selecting items. Having three items listed as “edge” is time wasting. Chamfer tool is a joke, some edges will chamfer and others won’t. Lofting tool has serious limits to dimensions. Also there is no 3d sketching at all! For $500Au/year I was expecting a polished product hence the 1 star. P.S. the whole time I was writing this the app is stuck trying to delete the edge of a spline.

  • Great app but pricing doesn’t support creators

    mksanderson

This is the gold standard for getting creative with an Apple Pencil. I’ve used it for various woodworking and construction projects at home over the last year and loved it. Unfortunately, with the pricing increasing drastically I won’t be continuing to subscribe. I wish there was a tier between free which doesn’t let me print 2d plans and the full on version. As a hobbyist not generating an income and only using this every few weeks or months as I complete a project and move to the next it’s just not justifiable to spend so much when that money could go to the projects themselves. I hope to see this change in future. I haven’t deducted points because ultimately that has no bearing on what a great product this is.

  • Not worth the price

    Lamps

I have just cancelled my subscription, as the app is just not worth what is being asked for a subscription. It is a good app, there is no doubt and for doing quick sketches on-the-go, or working out a single part, it was relatively easy and even fun. It did take some getting used to, however, coming from the established end of CAD (AutoDesk), I certainly had to learn a new workflow, but it wasn’t all that difficult. There were frustrating aspects, certainly; it didn’t always “select” parts that were quite obviously right in the viewport without zooming right in on them and multi-select was always sigh-inducing.But it comes down to the price. As good as it is, it is in no way on par with the likes of AutoCAD, Inventor, or Fusion360. I’ve read many times where the developer defends the price-point by comparing it to the others and saying “well, look what they cost!”. Yes, but they do so much more than just the drawing aspect. As a really basic example, can I take two parts drawn separately and combine them into one in Shapr3D? No, no I can’t. I can very easily do so in various different ways in many other CAD applications, including free ones.Perhaps there need to be more payment levels, in order that a hobbyist with less than 100 drawings does not have to pay the same amount as a professional, who may have 1000’s.As I’ve just learned, all but 2 of my designs are now locked, having unsubscribed, so I assume that I’ll have to pay a “fee” to get them out again.

  • Looks amazing, but not for casual users or hobbyists

    Aelthys

I found this through the Concepts blog and was initially really excited. Went through the tutorial which was great. Then I got to the subscription. Don’t get me wrong, compared to other CAD tools this is clearly a great buy.The problem is I’m not a professional, and even at the price point offered it’s an order of magnitude beyond what most non-professionals doing 3d scribbles for fun will likely be willing to invest. The mobile market is predominantly based on micro transactions. The pricing model for this more closely resembles the professional desktop tools moving to tablet, similar to what Adobe has done. For the moment i’ll have to be content with sketchup on desktop. For the developers I’m sure you’ve agonised over the possible pricing models and arrived at the one you feel best balances your costs versus growth of your user base.I’m not suggesting you should change anything but I’m sure I’m not the only potential user priced out of the market. For what it’s worth, some things I probably would have bought straight up as one-off unlocks:* import jpeg/png* export skp* up to 10-ish save filesFor hobbyists and casual users, what we’re looking to buy is the convenience of doing things on a tablet that we’re already able to do for free on a desktop (or a Surface Pro). This might not be that tool, but one will come along to fill that gap soon enough.

  • Loved it but..

    Dexxta Bloo

Edit: with the app now at $47 a month or $370 a year it has become even more unaffordable for hobbyist designers. App now requires sign up too that was not mentioned in the update notes. Sadly I have had to find alternatives. The app is a work of art itself, works fantastic. My only issue is the $40 a month subscription. Maybe a once off iap to unlock a hobbyist version with some more workspaces and some other export or save options that would suit a hobbyist would fill that missing middle gap between trying the app and being a pro. I find I have to screenshot the app to output a png image that I then have to redraw before I can use it too.Other than that, it is the perfect compliment to my iPad but I am not a professional and don’t use the app for work. I do use it for 3D design hobby projects. I have found it to be extremely stable, easy to use, and actively developed. Anyone with even a basic level of 3d design will be able to use it and there is a host of tutorial videos.

Thanks for the feedback. Our pricing might be high to some, but still more affordable than most CAD tools. A little insight into the industry: While other desktop solutions can cost up to thousands of dollars a year, we offer our CAD software for $149 / year. We think that's very competitive. We have created the app for professional in the first place who'd use the app for their daily work. But we know that there are others as well who might be interested. So to help students and educators, we have created an educational program, where they can get the PRO version of the app for free as long as they are enrolled in any educational institution. If someone is only a (3D printing) hobbyist, they can use Shapr3D without paying for a PRO plan as there is an STL exporting possibility for 3D printing. We think that is a fair exchange. We provide the full PRO version to students and educators for free and 3D printing possibilities without paying for the app. It's good and free for 3D printing. And we ask for a competitive price (third what Fusion is) from those who use the app for professional, daily work. We believe this is a fair value proposition on our end. Hope more and more people will agree with us in the long run. :)

  • Brilliant

    Bosko73

I couldn’t get my head around CAD. Tried a bunch of desktop CAD software and still was scratching my head. Then thanks to a 3D printer forum, found Shapr3D and started my “journey” with CAD. Sharpr3D is rated so high for one reason, it’s actually brilliant. One massive plus is that you can edit STL files with relative ease (obviously dependant on what you actually need to do with said STL’s). The tutorials are fantastic, and the learning curve is no where near as steep as some of the desktop software out there. Unfortunately, I’ve just cancelled my subscription - as my knowledge of CAD has increased and am moving on to Fusion360, but Shapr3D is a program that I’ll keep on my iPad and won’t hesitate in recommending to anyone. Absolutely fantastic piece of software! Excellent work!

  • Still learning

    Broomball

Massive jump in functionality with this version. So much better to use. Still learning how to use it but latest changes add more logical selection options (to me anyway). Would like to see a better pricing model than currently. Just too expensive to upgrade for occasional use. But some sort of Advanced/intermediate pricing model with the ability to import/export .stl files would be attractive. Not a fan of annual fees, but the ability to purchase certain functionality may also work as long as we as the customer get to pick and choose our options. Love the ability to do this on the IPad which is now my primary computer.

Thanks for the feedback. We plan to create more tutorials in the future too. You can find the current ones in the app and on the website as well: https://shapr3d.com/design-school/Regarding the prices:Our pricing might be high to some, but still more affordable than most CAD tools. • Not quite there yet

    Tahufan1000

I cannot rant and rave about this app enough - it’s awesome!I myself, am a mechanical engineer, and I make sure to show all of my workmates and friends in the field of design and engineering your product. It makes designing easy and more natural. However, this app has some drawbacks.. as a professional, why would I want to pay this much money per year to do only half of what the AutoCAD suite and Solidworks packages are capable of? If it was a once off payment, I think that would be different and more competitive, because otherwise, how can you compete? 99% of industries will choose more professional packages because they can do more, they secure large deals with big engineering firms for years, and not every company wants to then invest in an iPad Pro which has to be charged and results in work downtime, which is not ideal either.I have a mate who’s an industrial designer, and he says your app is great, and more suited to his profession rather than mine, but again, it’s not something he’d take to work, but more of something to do at home when working on your own, small scale projects.Great potential, but I think you’re aiming at the wrong market.3/5
