Description

The SharkSmart app provides key information and resources to users to help further reduce the small risk of shark bite in NSW waterways.

Features and resources include:

My Risk
It provides a range of interactive features and resources including a fundamental risk assessment profile that allocates a user into a ‘risky’ or ‘safer’ behaviour rating using factors understood to affect shark bite risk. Risk rating escalates higher or lower subject to the input of the user (e.g. swimming at sunrise or dawn would increase the risk). The risk level can be reduced by adjusting risky behaviour but never eliminated (unless the user doesn’t go in the water)

Maps
This feature shows where the user is in relation to the general location of beaches in the Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program, alternative saltwater swimming locations, alerts about shark-related incidents and news and real-time information from NSW’s VR4G shark listening stations.

Species
This feature presents images of dangerous and non-dangerous sharks and other marine animals that sting and bite for information and education purposes.

Social Media
The app offers integrated social media channels hosted by the NSW Department of Primary Industries including Facebook, NSW SharkSmart Twitter and YouTube. There’s also a link to the Department’s SharkSmart webpage so users can be up-to-date with the latest information provided by the department.

Information
Details about the NSW Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program are provided.

Other Safety Programs
The NSW Government hosts, supports and/or promotes a range of other water safety programs. Links to key programs are provided so user can get the most out of NSW beautiful waterways while staying safer.

What’s New

Version 2.1

Please update your SharkSmart app as we have included a list of VR4G listening station locations. You can now filter alerts by time, region and location. You can also filter by Alerts Type which include Tagged sharks, SMART drumline, DPI Fisheries, Shark incidents, Aerial detection and Surf Life Saving NSW.

This update also improves the “My Beaches” whereby you can create a set of favourite beaches to get notified about.

Needs a few fixes

A good app in principle, but is quite buggy. Notifications don't go away once you have read the alerts. Am randomly getting 30+ notifications a day for areas of NSW I am not in, that are outside the areas I have selected to recieve notifications for - it ignores my settings. App also ignores the times set in the scheduled Do Not Disturb time, meaning not only do I get alerts about sharks hundreds of kilometers away, I also get them at 3 in the morning. While writing this review I recived six separate alerts for beaches I am nowhere near and have not selected to get notifications for.

Good intent...

Like the other review, seems like some of the features of the app are not linked.
Eg
- Can’t find the beach names of favourite beaches, despite it being used in the alerts (Front Beach in South West Rocks)
- The alerts on the map appear to be rather old (and not helpful) whereas the alerts page has newer ones.
- it would be good if you could indicate how recent the alerts are on the map

App crashes on alert screen.

The app was working perfectly since originally loaded on my phone but as of yesterday 8/4/19 the app crashes every time the alert icon is pressed.
I have deleted and reloaded the app but when alerts is pressed the app still instantly closes.
