SHOT is the UK’s independent, professionally-led haemovigilance scheme.

Since 1996 SHOT has been collecting and analysing anonymised information on adverse events and reactions in blood transfusion from all healthcare organisations that are involved in the transfusion of blood and blood components in the UK. Where risks and problems are identified, SHOT produces recommendations to improve patient safety. The recommendations are put into the Annual SHOT Report, which is circulated to all relevant organisations including the four UK Blood Services, the Departments of Health in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland; the relevant professional bodies and all reporting hospitals.

The Annual SHOT Symposium brings together delegates from across the UK and beyond for the launch of the Annual SHOT Report and to share ideas, learn from peers and develop professional contacts. This one-day event includes presentations and debates on the hottest topics in transfusion safety, a poster competition, an abstract competition, and an opportunity for delegates to ‘Meet the Experts’ who help to make SHOT one of the world’s leading haemovigilance schemes.
