"Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time writing a review when I should really just be pointing at a game and demanding that people play it. This is one of those times. Steve Jackson's Sorcery! is an absolutely marvellous fantasy storybook adventure. Lushly illustrated and expertly told, it should not be missed by anyone even remotely interested in the genre." -- Gamezebo
"Let’s not mince words here... Sorcery’s unique blend of tabletop-like roleplaying (including an incredible combat system quite unlike anything I’ve seen before), and elaborate branching pathways with custom scripts preserving the feeling of Steve Jackson’s work make me now want to… no, HAVE TO acquire an iOS device" - Just Press Start
From legendary designer Steve Jackson, co-founder of Lionhead Studios (with Peter Molyneux), and Fighting Fantasy and Games Workshop (with Ian Livingstone); and inkle, the studio behind the award-winning, App Store featured Frankenstein, Sorcery! is an interactive adventure like never before.
The app uses inklewriter technology to tell your journey in real-time, shaping the story around your choices. The text itself changes based on how you play and what you do, and in combat, the action is description on the fly based on how you play.
Featuring original illustrations by John Blanche, new character art by Eddie Sharam (DC Comics), an interactive map by Mike Schley (Wizards of the Coast) and music by David Wise (Donkey Kong Country).
"The Shamutanti Hills" is Part 1 of 4. Part 2, "Kharé: Cityport of Traps", is out now, and will load all of your completed Part 1 games to continue your adventure. Part 3 is coming later this year (but while you wait, check out our new game, 80 DAYS).
Do you know how long I've been looking for a phone game that's engrossing and deep but can be played in short bursts in portrait mode (as befits public transport and idle moments)? Finally, the perfect type of smartphone game!
Brilliant

Without a doubt, the app itself is worth 5-stars. The map, the story telling and the new combat format really set the new standard for the game book genre - if you are a fan, this is by far the best yet produced. The story holds true to what I remember of the original book and the "go back and choose a different path" is much better than the bookmark system in other game books. The contextual background noise is very well thought out, though, I think some "mood music" would not go astray to polish the work as a whole.I think the price point is fair for early adopters, more bang-for-buck than other game books and certainly a good deal less than what you'd pay for a paper copy these days (I'm kicking myself that I got rid of mine). It is a short book (assuming you found the golden path to give you the best possible outcome for the other books in the series). On that note it would be good if Inkle could work on replayability but at the end of the day this is a story, albeit interactive, that has a beginning, a middle and an end and once you are done you are done (funny how that works with books). At any rate, the next instalments can't come quick enough. One can only hope that new stories are also on the horizon.
One of the best games ever made!

I don't normally write reviews for games, but this one is a special exception. I've played hundreds of App games and this is among the very few that I cannot put down. The first Sorcery! isn't as long as the second and third instalments, but it is still well worth the price. The game itself is an absorbing, thrilling and even amusing story (in the form of a choose-your-own-adventure book, but with a cleverly designed combat system) that changes with your every choice and decision, influencing how the rest of the game and the following instalments play out. I found myself playing through the game several times before I moved on to Sorcery! 2 (which is affected by your choices in the first Sorcery!). I cannot highly recommend this game enough. It is so incredibly well designed (I believe it is adapted from a book series) and highly engaging that I play it (in the middle of Sorcery! 3 currently) every chance I get - and believe me, that doesn't happen often!
Very good indeed

This is a very good game. The strength of the original gamebook was it's fantastic sense of place and characters. Also deciding on whether to risk a fight or loss of health points by choosing to dive into situations was really good fun. Both of these aspects have been captured in this digital gamebook. In addition all of the orignal artwork has been added. As has some great music and ambiant sound effects. This really is a very polished experience.I notice a few people trolling about the fact that it is only 1/4 of the overall story. But the original gamebook series was 4 separate books. Complaining that there isn't the full story in the first game is like complaining the Harry Potter wasn't resolved by the end of the first book. In other words, there is a load of content and game in this game. This game is also far superior to the Fighting Fantasy apps produced by Tin Man Games. I bought Blood of the Zombies and was really disappointed. Sorcery!, on the other hand, delivers.
