The SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a South African based movement who has the legal backing of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act No 169 of 1093. Our mandate is the prevention of cruelty to all animals in every sphere such as domestic, commercial and farming in the Benoni area.
We are an NPO (non-profit organization) and are reliant solely on donations from members of the public and receive no government funding. As the official pound for Benoni we receive a small grant from the municipality to collect and look after the stray animals in the Benoni jurisdiction. This is only a very small part of what we do daily.
The jurisdiction we cover is approximately a 175.55 km². This comprises of suburbia, plots, multi racial townships and many informal settlements. The area it is said has the largest equine population per square kilometer in the Southern Hemisphere. There are many public animal facilities to check such as pet shops, abattoir, petting parks etc..
