Did you know it’s the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation – not heat – that causes skin cancer, as well as sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage?
Unlike the sun’s heat and light, we can’t see or feel UV rays. That means we usually don’t know when our skin is being damaged until it’s too late.
So how do you know when you need to protect your skin?
The free SunSmart app makes it simple, by providing you with sun protection times each day using forecast information from the Bureau of Meteorology and live UV data from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.
Check the app each day – or set a handy alert – and slip, slop, slap, seek and slide to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
*SunSmart is a free app developed by Cancer Council Victoria, a not-for-profit organisation. App data is limited to Australia.

Good to know what hours I should avoid being in the sun
But why does the app still not keep track of my location when I am travelling?
I have mobile data turned on, and I have location services enabled, but still I have to tell the app where I am. Sometimes it gets my location when I go away from home, but never returns me to my home location.
Perfect for Families and Early Childhood Professionals
I love this app, and have set my daily alerts to 8:30am. I even received them while on holiday in New Zealand! The UV updates as it goes up or down, without having to leave and come back to the app. Never had any issues with times of day, however I do have to manually change location, which is fine! One addition I’d love is smaller suburb options, as Sydney is a huge place so it may be different from Glebe to Manly Beach, for example. Or not? Anyway will continue to use & recommend this app!
Location service does not work.
The app cannot trace my location even if location services are enabled for the app and the manual selection include only some selected suburbs, if they fix this then this app can be really helpful.
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
