By keeping your location stored away from your phone but not directly accessible to your loved ones, you don't have to give up on your privacy. Only in an emergency, like if you're missing. Your secure contacts will be able to submit a request of your last known location records. After they're verified in the app, they will be given your last location records, not without first notifying you about such an event. Therefore, you know exactly who has access to your location and make sure they only exercise this right in an emergency situation.
