The North 40 App features a To-Do list and daily schedule system that work together to encourage goal setting and careful planning. It also can be a place to record with whom you work and goals you have in order to focus planning with a purpose in mind. Goals and people can be attached to events to organize your schedule, and both goals and plans keep a record of things that you have done related to that goal or person. In addition to these fundamental attributes of the app, the North 40 also can record notes and has a simple budgeting system.

Consider the following story. In the countryside, farmer Thomas set out to repair his cornfield fence on the old north 40. Shortly after going to work, he noticed the barn door's creaky hinges. Halting the fence work, he addressed the door, only to spot the squeaky water pump nearby. With tools in hand, he redirected his attention to the pump, forgetting about both the fence and the barn door. Shortly after getting started, Thomas's gaze shifted again to a leaky roof. As he attempted to patch the roof, a broken plow in the adjacent field called for immediate fixing. Distracted yet dutiful, Thomas moved from task to task, each one preventing him from completing the previous. As the sun dipped below the horizon, Thomas surveyed his farm, a mosaic of unfinished projects. The fence still in disrepair, the barn door creaking, the water pump squeaking, the leaky roof dripping, and the broken plow left untouched. Despite a day of constant effort, Thomas couldn't ignore the stark reality – none of the tasks were complete.
