Editors' Notes

We wouldn’t dream of planning a holiday without consulting TripAdvisor’s appraisals of hotels, restaurants and attractions. But this robust app does much more than that, letting you book your entire trip—from flights to museum tickets—in one place. For those who embrace spontaneity, TripAdvisor is great for quickly finding spots nearby to stay, eat or play, and the honest user reviews frequently save us from travel troubles.

Great, but let’s make it better

Obviously I love the TripAdvisor app or I wouldn’t have written more than 150 reviews to date. Infact the app relies on folks like me giving unbiased advice to patrons and feedback to proprietors so everyone gets something useful out of it. So what’s in it for me apart from the warm glow?
Well, how about information? With all the analytics around nowadays you’d think some anonymised stats about who is reading, for how long, what they did while they were there and afterwards (booked, wrote their own review, etc), demographics, was the proprietor one of them, etc. would be a good start. C’mon TripAdvisor, we know you have this data at your fingertips, so how about letting your collaborators in on it?
One more thing; reviewers like me ought to be treated like the restaurant reviewers of old, ie. recognised at the point of booking, and treated decently when we turn up. I’m happy to acknowledge this in the review, if I write one. You figure out how to make it happen. Thanks.

Magnificent Acropolis

Having seen the Acropolis and Parthenon in pictures since childhood the fascination of the reality of being there could not be dimmed by the hoards of tourists and unrelenting heat in late September. The site and the structures are simply amongst the most magnificent on earth. The pictures in books cannot replace the views from the heights of Athens ( no buildings are allowed anywhere near the height of the Acropolis) and cannot reveal the timelessness and sense of history thick in the air. The constant repair of damage done by the Persians and many others, including failed restoration projects by the Greeks since the 1800s, cannot remove the extraordinary vibe of this ancient seat of great glory and mysterious Gods and great leaders and rulers. The seamless tourist process was very good although we were not offered headphones and an auditory guide which would have been appreciated. The signposting leaves a little to be desired in terms of available options and must have been obstructed by the large crowds.
