Description

Welcome home.

Tumblr: home to your new favorite artist. Come for the effervescent digital paintings in every flavor of fandom. Stay for the breathtaking original offerings of those same artists. And, in between all the art: Old internet energy. All the fandoms you could wish for. Enough memes to knock out a moderately-sized mammal. Add to it or simply scroll through and soak it up.

Every piece of life-changing art you discover, every waterfall GIF you gaze at in wonder, every quote you reblog, every tag you curate—that’s all you. Reblog them to show the world who you are, what you love. You’re the explorer. We’re just a map you all keep on making. Welcome home. Make it yours.

If you’re an artist, you’re coming in hot to a community that will love your work. Think of this as your online studio with many options: A portfolio, your calling card for your creations with in-built social engagement and community, or an online drawing board, a place to hash out ideas, share sketches, and gather feedback. Take requests and commissions or join art challenges like Goblin Week, Mermay, Julycanthropy, and Yeehawgust. Discuss the finer points of your favorite brushes. Create OC art for your favorite writers on Tumblr. Sell prints (coasters! mugs! tchotchkes!) of your work—to an audience invested in you and actively seeking these things via our Artist Alley. Create a webcomic (have you heard of Heartstopper? Started here.)

Now picture all of the above, but on the go. That’s what this is.

Chances are if you’ve seen it elsewhere, it probably started here. That digital painting you can’t stop thinking about. That text post explaining the exquisite specifics of something you never realized you needed to know. Your dashboard will become a tapestry of all the wonderful, nonsensical, fantastical things you like. Whether you post, lurk in likes, or reblog to your personal online fridge. Whatever your community, you’ll find a ready-made home here.

When you have something to say—a hot take on the finer points of a Virgo moon, Barbie fanfic, an image of your turtle Harold that you simply *have* to share with the world: Shoot your shot with a photo, a video, or a text post. Make an audio post of your ramblings or share your current favorite song via Spotify. We even have a pre-set chat post for all your incorrect quotes.

The reblog starts conversations for everyone, creates jokes, and continues them—sometimes across the world and over the years. Time and space, right here at your very fingertips. Whatever you choose to send into our effervescent digital ether, know that it can, and will, go anywhere. (Unless, of course, you use our post-level reblog controls. Private blog? Private post? All possible here).

Tumblr is the home of fandom. We’ve all got that one special blorbo from our shows. There’s fanart you’ll want to stare at, reblog, stare at again—or create yourself, and share with the community. You can read your favorite ficcers from ao3 *and* see their OC art on Tumblr *and* discuss the finer points of lore with them. Pokémon? Got it. Marvel? Here. Kpop? Check. Supernatural? Of course. Minecraft? Ready and waiting. Star Wars? Yes! Doctor Who? Doctor YOU! You get the idea: it’s all here.

It’s a whole universe out here. If the prospect of creating, reblogging, shipping, and curating feels a little daunting, head over to tips.tumblr.com, where Cat Frazier of animatedtext.tumblr.com will take you through the finer points of Tumblr etiquette—the effervescent, the eeby, the deeby.

So. Sign up, fall in love with some art, follow some tags, and find your place on the dashboard. Then reblog, like, and post to your heart’s content. Or simply drift through the dream you’ve created for yourself—you hold the keys to this kingdom.

Photos and Asks

Okay so I like tumblr, but being an artist that draws on the iPad it’s seriously frustrating that every time I answer an ask I have to take a photo of it and THEN add it to a separate post with the drawings instead of just simply being able to answer the ask and then instantly place in my artwork. Tumblr is a decent app but this one thing both seriously bothers me and not to mention the only real way you can get anywhere on tumblr is if someone famous reblogs one of your posts and even then most people won’t actually check out the rest of your account. Tumblr is amazing and I love the whole ask idea but it’s becoming impossible to bare with the app version, I don’t want to keep putting my art on the computer either because it lowers the quality of it.

Honestly if you’re just there to post random stuff and move on with your life then this app is for you but if you want to be here for a long time and gain a following? Not so much.

Frustrating changes, won’t accept feedback

Updated review:
The search function is next to non existent, it barely functions and is infuriating. The app and website keeps making unnecessary changes that make things worse and more annoying to use. You used to be able to click on someone’s post and see the post on their blog now and if you clicked the person they rebooted it from, you would see it on them blog, now you are taken directly to their blog instead of the individual post page. The UI changes are also awful and making things worse for the sake of being like every other app, to make things ‘easier’ for newer users, even though those newer users are joining tumblr to get away from those design features from other apps. The app had decided to become yet another ‘TikTok’ lite with a ‘for you’ page, short video reels, live feature you can’t turn off(in some countries) and an annoying image viewer that forces you to scroll to the next image and is overly distracting with the way it displays things. Tumblr staff refuse to listen to criticism and dismiss it because these new changes are apparently better, but they are not. Very very disappointed.

Rampant bots and explicit advertising

As a support staff, those at Tumblr seem intent on brushing their reports under a rug with the hopes that no one will be the wiser. This app is run rampant by bots - bots that target every blog and follow accounts using automated porn or dating app-oriented blogs. Tumblr's response? To do nothing about the actual problem even after dozens of reports to them, downright refusing to acknowledge they have an account verification problem and that possibly half of their platform is held firmly by automated accounts that could easily be weeded out by having a CAPTCHA check when creating an account, and choosing to punish their user base instead.

That's not even mentioning the inappropriate ads that run on your very own dashboard, which you cannot hide from your personal view or have any choice in dictating, as they do not attach to your cookies.

Do not allow yourself or children on the app as you will be immediately targeted by bots and explicit advertising, and will receive not even a word of acknowledgement of this problem by those who take reports, as they choose to remain blissfully aware of their platforms shortcomings, and prefer to give the finger to their users instead.
